• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Not wonderful news for TR650 owners

Sounds to me that BMW have finally given up trying to get the Rotax EFI 650 thumpa to run reliably while/because meeting emission standards.:(

There is a lot if mis information out there re the 650GS/X models and firmware, virtually all the firmware versions for the models are stable and they run well other than some releases in 2000/2001. There have been updates to cover specific problems and improve/standardize diagnostics and an upgrade to the later G650GS for EU5 emissions compliance. Too many owners/dealers though failed to check/update firmware revisions and/or use correct starting procedures so myths about firmware persist.

The 2013-15 BMS-E equipped models have had one firmware change for a hot start issue which was in part a compression release lever problem due some change in manufacture of that part. Now there is a second upgrade with the recall with stalling, the details are in the pdf's published at NHTSA and the problem does sound like a firmware routine which would be common to the Terra/Strada

The last part is supported by the real world sales figures, the first bit not so. Here are the total year sales of bikes for Australia (I hope the table I pasted below is readable). What it shows is that the TR650 probably stole sales from Suzuki, possibly from both their single DR as well as the twin DL, and possibly some sales from XT660 and DLR650. The BMW figures below that show that there was no threat to the "$30K unicorns" or indeed any other cannibalism of BMW sales. I suspect that many people who are going to buy BMWs are going to buy them regardless of what else is on the market, or how much it costs. Even the closes competitor, G650GS sales are virtually untouched by the introduction of the Terra (no mention of the Strada in the stats that year so presumably the number below is TR650 Strada and Terra combined). The first shipment of Terras (1 per dealer) arrived in dealers a couple of days before Christmas 2012 so there were only a handful of sales in 2012 (mine was one of those).

Yes you right right.. I was 3 days off with cash in hand to go buy a dr650 i was sold/set on buying one.. but to my luck i was called in to work for the 3 days and only by chance couldn't get in to the shop. I when to a farmers field day after the 3 days and walked pasted a husky bike stall. it took all of 3 sec's to fall in love with her. i'm happy with my buy of the tr 650 and never once through of the out dated dr650.
