Hi all,
I recently picked up a 2008 SM 610 from a local shop who didn't seem to have the maintenance records. After riding it home and around the neighborhood I decided it would be a good idea to do a quick oil change before I put more miles on it. Today I picked up 2L of torco semi-synth 10w-40 (as recommended by the local husky shop) and got to work.
I warmed the motor and shut it off. I then unscrewed the oil filler cap and removed the 12mm bolt and let the oil drain. A minute or two later I got a long enough extension for the 10mm allen bolt, popped that one off too and let the rest drain while I cleaned the shavings off the magnet. I put both bolts back in and then measured out a little bit less than 1.37 quarts (as per the owners manual) and poured it in. Screwed the cap back in and fired it up. Everything seemed normal except after I shut it down and let the oil cool/drain for a few minutes I noticed the capacity window was completely full.. I loosened the 12mm bolt and drained out a little bit. Leveled the bike again and still full! I did this 2-3 more times and I couldn't seem to make any difference!
I fired the motor up again to mix the oil a bit, drained a bit more and finally seemed to get the oil level between the two lines on the sight. I probably drained at least an extra 500ml! Why would there be such a discrepancy in oil drained vs replaced? I didn't replace the oil filter as I needed to order one so that'll take a week or two. I also didn't pull the 'bag' filter but I can't imagine that would make up such a large difference in oil drained. Any ideas what might have gone wrong? Anyone else experience anything similar?
