  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Oil filter comparison

Husqvarna
AA Class
I'm doing a bunch of oil changes as I break in my new bike. And I saw three kinds of filters available, K&N, Hiflofiltro and Husqvarna. Well, I couldn't resist and bought one of each to compare.

At first glance the K&N and Hiflo look the same, but they aren't. Here's a shot from above.

The difference in heights don't bother me, but the internals are all a bit different. I'm not qualified to evaluate those differences. But the rubber seal looks a bit rounder on the Husky filter. Given these are all under pretty cheap, I think I'll stick with the Husqvarna one.
For what it's worth.

I think the main thing is the pressure of the spring for the by-pass valve, some model are opening ''to early'' and let unfiltered oil go back in the system.

I would'nt worry about the roundness of the seals. Once fit onto the nipple they will conform.

interesting comparison.i was told hiflo manufactures the k&n filters for k&n.i would agree the prudent thing to do is use the oem unless someone can do more sophisticated testing in regards to oil pressure.dan

Im using the KN filter instead of the OEM mainly because i find them on Ebay and are much cheaper than OEM(at least here in Greece ...),and because i ve been using KN products for several applications and im very satisfied in general...The bike runs fine with them,no difference with the OEM ive used a couple of times...Nice post by the way

Just an FYI oil filter addition for what it's worth. I've been using Scotts stainless steel filters since 04 (04TC450,06TE450,08TXC450)

More FYI - KandPengineering also has SS filters and a good FAQ section http://www.kandpengineering.com/faq.shtml They make a good case for why paper filters or anti-drain back flaps for that matter, are not the way to fly. I've also read, somewhere else, that an overly restrictive (paper filter) will bypass until oil reaches operating temp.

Pretty slick stuff especially if all of their filters are MFG using the same process and Quality control requirements of the FAA/PMA filters. Have you had to change the gasket on the end, I would be a bit concerned about solvent / heat degradation. How about ultrasonic cleaning, I did see anything on their web site for or against.

I might have to pick one of those up. I change my oil quite often, would pay for it's self in a hurry.

K&P Engineering is the maker of the Scotts SS filters. It is printed on the packaging. I have them in both my bikes. They are great imo.

ultrasonic bath and plug the opening of filter to prevent crap to get inside in varsol.

Any other cleaning ideas? I've no sonic bath but I've got a compressor. I guess as SS any cleaners good to go?

Edit that: just read the cleaning info on the K&P site. I'll get one for sure but don't see a listing for Huskys..

then check for Husqvarna instead of husky :busted:lol, yes they have filters for husky , check under tab application/pricing then offroad bike cheer.

:D went to Huskysport and got the original HUSQVARNA one lol. I did ask if they carried the mesh ones but no. Maybe next time.....
