    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Oil filter mod To oil screens?

so as the title suggests i was wondering if it is possible. i have a 2000 te610 and plan on using it to commute and want to extend the life of the oil. these engines dont have a filter but rather a oil screen that say 4 inches by 1 inch in diameter and looking at it it can only catch the really big particles. and my plan it to make a oil filter cartridge to take the place of the screen. because of the limited space and the priority of keeping high oil flow i was thinking of highly pleated but relatively porus material say 50 microns or so again this is to help prolong oil and engine life since commuting is a easy way of racking up a ton of miles and just having a simple metal screen is insufficent.

find where i can get differnt kinds of filter media
find glue for the ends of the media that will withstand heat and oil
preform bench flow tests

lastly does anyone know what kind of oil pressure the little minuki oil pump can put out?

My first thought is that making your own oil filters may be quite a project, by the time you do testing. I guess if it leaks you aren't that much worse off, just no screen filtering either.
What I would do is look for a place to tap into the oil flow and mount a small remote filter. This is a very common practice on older British bikes that only had screen filtering. The most common conversion is to mount a Norton filter base and tap into the oil return line. A good auto parts person can show you some to pick from. Also shops specializing in hydraulics could be a source.
 
This is an intriguing idea but I wouldn't try it. There just isn't much volume in those little screens that could fit a filter pleated deeply enough to provide enough surface area to come anywhere near the flow rate of the screens at a given pressure loss. I think it would work but you'd have less oil flowing to the engine (even with 50-micron media) and who knows how much less oil flow the engine can stand? You are on the right track in finding out the curve of the oil pump and running bench tests on your filters, but I think at the end of the day a big ol' external filter would be better.
 
i see what you guys are saying, does anyone know if the oil oilline from the crankcase behind the cylinder is under pressure? also what would be the best way to tap one of these?
 
ive been looking around for filter media and it would seem that you cant just buy say a square foot of the stuff it just isnt sold that way. My best option would be to get some cartrige type oil filters for tractors and some other types of vehicles. As far as oil flow most filter have a nominal filtration at 20 microns, a cheap fuel filter i happened to see at lowes for a lawnmower( the clear plastic housing with inner paper filter) was rated at 50 microns, and for comparison a human hair is about 62 microns.

after doing some research and physically tinkering with my spare parts 610 engine screen i now think my best option is to mount a external filter.

has there been any threads or writeups on how to do that with these engine and where i can get the parts nessesary?
