  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

What oil is prefered for 4t Huskys?
A simple thread, with oil changes so regularly, is it important to use premium fully sinthetic oil?

You'll find that this is a never ending discussion. Bottom line, use a good quality motorcycle specific oil. If you can't find 10w-60, 15w-50 is a good alternative. If you don't want to go full synthetic, go blended. As long as you change the oil regularly, your motor will be happy. AGIP, Motorex, Maxima, ELF, Spectro, Motul...You can find some good deals on line.

I use Rotella 15w40 dino oil. This oil works great in any motor. Dont get caught up in all the oil hype. Its silly to buy that high dollar oil if you are going to change it often.

Big thumbs up for Rotella! Used it for years in many applications from my 4t Yamaha snowmobile, cars, lawnmowers, road bikes and of course my Huskys.

By changing rotella regularly do you mean after every ride, just trying to figure the time/value for money angle. If it needs changing much more frequently than say a top of the line Maxima/bellray/motul etc. where is the value given its total package is not as good in the protection department. I do agree that there needs to be a happy medium. For instance my mate only uses Motorex for his (KTM). At 110 bucks for 4 litres and changing out his oil every 3rd. ride I can see him getting the value his oil has in longevity-which you pay for say against a motul here for 70 bucks.

I think everyone likes to brag about how often they change their oil but the deciding factor should be how you ride it. If you race it and hammer it all day long then I would change it after the race. For casual trail riding with moderate revs then I think about every 200 miles is fine.

What weights does the Rotella oil come in?

Isnt this a diesel oil?

I think i saw this in walmart the other day.

What is the advantage in running diesel oil other than it having a higher TBN?

cheaper, good detergent package, not energy conserving...so no clutch slippage..., meets a zillion standards

oh yea and its cheap

Yes Walmart carries the Rotella. We change ours about every 10 hours or so which is usually 3 rides. Hey I run the same oil in my Ford SD trucks and I have 180K in one and 144K in the other. In the bikes we get no clutch slippage. Rekluse reccommends the Rotella with the clutch kits. As cptseawolf said "oh yea and it's cheap". Not only is it cheap it works. I run the Rotella in the white jug 15w-40.

I did a bunch of research on oil here it is. I also posted stuff for oil filters if u have street bikes.
This was from a email from someone @ shell
We recently ran the JASO MA friction test on Rotella T with Triple
Protection 15W-40, Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 (CI-4) and our soon to be
introduced (within the next 2 months) Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 CJ-4.
All three oils passed the wet clutch friction test. Rotella T Synthetic
5W-40 (CI-4) has more than 1.2% ash (JASO MA spec limit) so it can not
be classified as JASO MA. However, Rotella T with Triple Protection
15W-40 and our soon to be introduced Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 CJ-4 do
meet JASO MA."

API rating -- JASO MA requires SG, SJ, SH, SL or SM. Rotella 15W-40 Triple Protection is rated SM so it meets JASO MA.

o Suflated ash -- JASO MA requires no more than 1.2% of mass. The new Rotella 15W-40 rates 1.0% of mass for suflated ash. Therefore, it meets JASO MA.

o Phosphorus -- JASO MA specified a range of 0.08% of mass to 0.12% of mass. A virgin Blackstone analysis I saw showed 989 ppm of phosphorus, or 0.0989%. It meets JASO MA.

High Temperature High Shear -- JASO MA requires 2.9 mPa-s or better. I read elsewhere the new Rotella 15W-40 has a value of 4.1. It meets JASO MA.

Harley Davidson specs 15w40 HDEO oils as their second choice for years. The HDEO specs should be what you look at versus the JASO. IMO

Hi Richard Moore ( I bet the girls had fun with that handle) What is the Rotella equivalent in Australia. I do not think we get the Rotella brand but is Shell flogging it here under a different name?

Cheers Mate.

Does anyone know the european name for rotella has ive never seen it in the uk.

Looks like the Shell Helix Diesel Super is the 15-40 heavy duty diesel oil (white bottle). And the Shell Helix Diesel Ultra is the 5-40 "synthetic" (blue bottle).

I am not sure if the formulation is different though.

Later,

Ill say it again, dont get caught up in the oil hupla, just run the 15w40 rotella and change at a reasonable interval and have fun riding.

Don't get hung up on Rotella either. Any name brand major oil company 15w-40 is going to do a good job.

What would anyone suggest using a certain type of synthetic oil on a 2000 TE410? Would it be the same as the new husky's? I had been using Mobil 1 for years and never had an issue. But since I have been more involved I have heard different stories on how you should only use motorcycle oil, and such. Since there are different additives and what not.
