  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Only 1st Gear !

84scrambler

Husqvarna
Pro Class
This has occurred on my 85wrx 250, Was calling out a neighbor one night doing 1st gear burnouts out by the ditch and when I went to do my launch I hit a neutral spot when shifting to 2nd gear and so on. So I had to limp home in 1st gear there is no other action going on in the trans but first gear and neutral . I have recently doubled the work load in my business and have very lil time to go exploring in the trans. for troubling shooting and once I get this fixed I am probably going to put this bike up for sale.

Could be the selector is worn pull your clutch off and look. It selects your gears , worth a look before splitting the cases.

Thanks guys, I was hoping for a easy repair.
Does any one know if Phillip is on vacation or something ? I ordered a clutch for the 87 and still have not heard back about the shipping cost.

One time I was out riding and my shifter fell off (had recently been wrenching on bike, apparently I underpay my mechanic  )
Didn't have the right wrench with me to tighten it down, so I shifted into first gear and threw the shifter in my pocket (clutch to start), riding in first gear is no fun. Now second gear on the other hand.... still fun [enough]!

As far as the bike not willing to shift into second, I think that Justintendo's suggestion makes the most sense. Shift return spring could be broken (or be jammed in some way). Pull clutch cover and pray for obvious fix.

It has to be the small coil spring that pulls up the shifter pawl that engages the claw into the drum. Once that spring breaks your stuck in what ever gear the shifter drum is in.

Don't lay the bike on its right side to pull the clutch cover, that would put the oil on the other side of the case but may draw the broken spring into the tranny. I would pull the clutch cover with it full of oil so the broken spring may wash out with the oil. We need to get lucky with this one so the spring is right there in the clutch cover.

Had the same thing happen to me on my 81 430 . The pin that the shifting claw came out and the claw broke . Replaced the claw and pin , so far so good .
