    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

paint stripper on the frame compared to media blasting

Firstly thanks for all the advice. I have a great running bike and just stripped it down and getting ready to make it into a tracker.

Right now I am preparing to strip and repaint the frame and wheels. I tried use aresol paint stripper with zero results on the frame. No paint cafe off. The frame has some rust which I hope I can paint over. I wish I could try media blasting, but I really cannot afford it. My plan is to chemically strip, prime, then rattle can paint. I have searched some other threads but haven't found an answer.

Does anyone have advice for stripping and repainting the frame and wheels?
 
I use aircraft stripper from Autozone with good results on epoxy and most other finishes. It will take multiple applications in cases of multiple paint coats. One thing that works well is to coat the object with the stripper and cover with plastic sheeting to prevent solvent evaporation. I did that on a Saab 9000 hood a few years ago. Saab paint is as tough as Husky epoxy. Also rinse well afterward and treat frame with Evapo-Rust( also available at Autozone)
 
Plus one on aerosol aircraft stripper. Use Marhyde brand, and will take off powder coat as well. Plus one on wrapping in two large garbage bags overnight. I take my frame when paint is all lifted to a high presure car wash and blast it (leave it in garbage bags while transporting it). I use a product immediately after I dry the frame called: Krug Kutter. It removes all rust, grease and pickles/etches it for primer, for frame so it won't rust for a month till you primer. I use a wire wheel ( both types)for my drill, and a small wood chisel to clean up any paint in the nooks and crannys! Use a small piece of blue painters masking tape to cover frame number (cut to exact size) while primering that you can remove. Then I paint over frame number and go lighter so paint doesn't cover up the number.
 
I tried some paint on stripper and it didn't touch the frame paint on my 73. I used a very inexpensive gravity sand blaster from Harbor Freight, about $25.00 and Black Beauty media, about $7.00 a bag (40 pounds I think. You'll never use all of it). Or you can use play sand. That did a great job on the frame. Brought it right down to the bare metal.
Plus now you'll have a sand baster on hand for all the other things you'll find you want to clean up. Very handy and inexpensive.

I do not have an air compressor so may stick to the stripper. I am kind of having fun trying to keep the budget as low as possible while still creating a stellar build. Tonight I'm going to go grab two cans of stripper and go from there.

This is my first time painting. Does anyone recommend a specific primer? Is it as easy as stripping, spraying primer, spray paint, then clear coat?

I have left the triple trees and swingarm in the frame. So I will have to be careful with taping. Here is a link to my build:

IMHO after you use the stripper and wheel and hours of work you will wish you bought a air compressor (you need one anyways) and the blaster. It does a way better job, way quicker, way EZer and now you have a sand blaster for the next thing.

+1 You will need or at least want to have an air compressor in your garage or basement. The "way better job" from the above quote is what you're going for. You won't regret it.
 
Using anything less than aircraft quality stripper is a waste as it is not as harsh as aircraft stripper. Aircraft paint is catylized Imron type paint that is tougher than anything you will ever find on a dirtbike

As far as primer, white epoxy is best, all colors will cover it. Red oxide primer is not good under lighter shades
 
I just had 2 frames and 2 Swingarms Blasted for $ 70. When I got them back they were ready for Paint. Couldn't possibly see that I could of Stripped them with my time a materials for any where near that. When doing a resto You need a good deal ever once and a wile, cause Your going to pay way more than you ever thought some where else........
 
82 said it all.If you can find any one that wll strip the frames for that kind of money.Do it!
