• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Hi guys can anyone tell me if you can swap the gas tank and radiator louvers off of a 87 and put them on the 86?? I like the looks of the 87 alot better than the 86. Or is there more differences than just the tank and louvers??? Any help would be great thanks Kevin

You have to add the tank mounts I did it on my 86 430ae, and yes they are a lot better design.
Check out my thread in vintage restoration forum hhtp://www.cafehusky.com/threads/1986-430-auto-resto.21749/ I stolle a set of mounts off another frame.

Thanks for the reply. that is a beautiful bike you have there. So the seat and airbox and everything else is the same i just need to get tank, tank mounts and rad louvers and i have a 87 style bike?? Theres an 86 husky 250 near my place with a spare motor. I was wanting to look at it but wanted to make sure i could convert it to an 87 first. Thanks a ton!!!

The tank / seat is a little wider on a 87 so you will need a different seat as well. If you get I have a spare seat with good foam, just needs recovered.

Sometimes when buying these things it isn't worth arguing about what year the thing is with the guy seling it. Engine aside there are quite a few differences in the chasis I will try and phrase these as how the 87-88 differs from the 85-86. 250,430,500 two stroke not talking 125 or four stroke

the forks are either the upsidedown ones of the cr or a more complex internal design
the rear hub has about a pound shaved off it and uses shorter sprocket bolts
The frame as discussed above has the gasoline tank attached by one small bolt going down in the front instead of a long one going through
All the following plastic parts are different air box number plates radiator scoops
The swingarm and linkage is different, there are quite a few differencs in how the tubes go in the area of the footpegs in my collection but the place the linkage attaches in different left right and maybe up down and front back for the newer 87-88 linkage. Different top shock mount left right as well.
The radiators themselves do seem the same, four stroke radiator longer with smaller cap.
Just because folks list stuff on ebay as all the mono shock water cooled stuff is interchangable doesn't make it so.

Yes,
Frank is right, there are alot of differences in the frame, suspension, motor, and forks.
Only some parts will interchange.

Well thanks for all the info and replies. If i just wanted to get the look of the 87 on the 86 would the tank seat radiator shrouds do it for the most part? everything else on the bike i dont mine but i really like the look of the 87 tank andshrouds...... or should i keep looking till i find the 87 i have been wanting??

It really depends on the condition mostly if you plan on riding it. These generally are bought by folks who enter events ride them hard and often and sell them a couple of years later and then eventually become someone's beater bike. With the 88 there were a lot of extra ones and the price was cut so the chances of finding one that didn't go through the life cycle described above is greater. I don't know enough folks for a large sample but moving to a ktm 300 in 1992 or 1993 seemed pretty common and some folks just kept the husky as they had many prior. Eventually they decide for some reason to liquidate all dirt bikes which is another way to avoid the normal life cycle.

As to your question the inner airbox, air box cover and both number plates will be in order to fit up against the seat and tank. What do you want wr, xc, cr.
