    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Power Source for a GPS

Been searching on a 2013 650 Terra for a power source for a Garmin Zumo 550. Found a spare BMW-like plug in the headlight area. Bought a BMW plug and it fits - tested and found a hot wire (number 02 on the BMW yellow wire).

Not sure if I should plug into it or not. When I did plug the GPS into it, the GPS did not turn off when the power was turned off. The plug tested as "switched" with an meter = power on when switch is on; power off when switch is off. But the Zumo stayed on.

Any suggestions? The other empty plug I found under the gas tank just above the head appears to be a Lambda sensor in the shop guide.

The Garmin will not shut down, it started using it's battery. Which plug did you buy? Do you have the part number handy? I heard it is a 5 volt plug for accessories. I want to plug into it for an usb outlet.
 
I went to the BMW shop where I bought the Terra and purchased two (one for a friend) BMW power plugs for about $15 each. It says on the bag: 3204460313-0085. Repair plug 2-pin. Dealer order number 8747. On the top of the bag it says 8330 0402 344 BMW group. Standard part. Fits all of the single plug.

On my previous BMWs, Ducatis and such - when the switch was turned off, the GPS would give a message saying it was powering down and then would. Not now.

Check in the Garmin settings to make sure that the "auto power off when ignition is turned off" setting is selected. It's also possible that this setting will only work when the GPS is on 12V power not 5v ?

I appreciate the settings suggestion. I did not see that option when I looked, but will ask Garmin support. The power that I connected to was 12V. The 5V I tried did the same thing. I looked at a new power cord from Garmin and it came with a 3V fuze - so i would imagine that the 5V should have worked. Thanks
 
FYI - I checked with Garmin technical support and there are no real settings in the Zumo 550 for auto power. If the device has stopped receiving power, it will ask the user if he/she wants to continue on battery or shut down.
 
Found a decent power source. Tried the BMW type plugs and they fit several places, but were not wired correctly/pinned correctly to supply GPS power.

Pulled the front light and tied into the small "peanut" light bulb that sits separately above the headlight. Gave appropriate, switched power and was relatively easy to access. The empty space around the headlight components provided great storage space to tuck in wiring.:)
