• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Protective gear advice and preferences

Husqvarna
A Class
Like everything else, the type of riding gear that is available now is vastly different than when I raced MX 30-plus years ago. That is a good thing, especially considering how modern tracks have evolved. My plan is to start riding some hare scrambles on my TE 310 and perhaps vintage class mx once I decide on a machine.

I have the basics (a good helmet, goggles, gloves, and boots), but should acquire some other protective gear. After these basics, what would you suggest and in what order of priority given my intentions? Are there specific brands that provide a good product for the money?

Many thanks

sixsixone-riot-knee-guard.jpg fps.png Padded shorts. Troy Lee, MSR, they all make them now.

I wear an "under the jersey" chest protector from Troy Lee. Works nice. I DO NOT miss my old, hard plastic one.
I wear Troy Lee elbow pads and like them but they do slide down during rocky hare scrambles.
Knee pads..Ive got some sixsixones and theyre like a lycra material. Real nice and they flex good with you knee when youre..ehem..picking your bike up of the ground haha

Slow down slightly off the fastest edge you are capably of riding at ...

Good luck with your racing and tracks have lots of jumps now as compared to 3 decades ago ... Take-offs are very important ...

Dress for the crash not for the ride... I suggest knee and elbow guards if its varied terrain and any chance of rocks.
I saw a knee split open after a low speed "get off" on a rocky trail on the weekend. If knee guards were worn, there would have been much less blood.

This ↓ kept my mind at ease when I ran out of talent around a corner and high sided into the bushes on Sunday...

Excellent. Who is making that?

Its from FOX. Should be pretty easy to find at moto gear shops. Google for Fox titan pressure suit (lots of other brands too)

My only gripe with it is the spine protector extends into your pants but it doesn't stay there... I just let it hang out above my pants and not tuck my jersey in the back.

and get something for hydration. Camelback, etc. I really don't remember how we did it before camelbacks and plastic bottles. Rode dry I guess. Where in MO you racing?

Yes, the drink systems seem great. I spent the past several decades racing bicycles etc. and became a big fan.

My hope is to ride some of the MO hare scrambles series and vintage mx once I settle on a machine (MOVMX series). I am still working on getting my skiils back together, and the real goal is to stay safe, have fun and meet some good people who share this interest. The MOVMX series saying of "we all go to work on Monday" really sums up my view perfectly.

Anyone wearing one of the neck support braces? So many of the amazing riders that I looked up to as a kid have experienced spinal cord injuries (Tony D., David Bailey, Magoo Chandler). I am wondering if these are overkill for someone who is not intending to race on modern MX tracks? Or, are they a smart move?

Yeah mate. I wear a leatt adventurer neck brace. I dont race and I'm usually the only one with a brace on most rides.
It could be overkill but no one cares...

If you get one make sure your armour is compatable and fits together.

Many thanks. My work is in neuroscience with brain, spinal cord and severe limb injuries. So, I see the unlucky side of things often and it reminds me of how fragile it all can be. Thus, I am just fine withe being the only one with a brace on.

Get a Leatt hydration system, it will work great with the Leatt neck brace. Be careful what kind of chest protector you get. I know guys have bought Leatts and couldnt wear them with the stuff they had already bought.
