  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Question for those in the know - kickstart mechanism

I have been plating misc components on my project rebuild and have a question for those of you in the know. Here goes. If I pull the kickstarter knuckle off the shaft on the outside of the case - does the kickstart lever then loose all the preload on the spring insde the case? It seems like I remember that you pull the left hand side case off the bike w/out removing the kickstarter hence you don't mess with the preload/tension on the interior spring. If I were to remove the exterior kickstart knuckle for plating can/would someone explain the reassembly procedure? I need to know that I can replace the kickstart lever wih the correct tension after plating before I start ripping stuff apart. Thanks in advance.
Rick

Yes it can be removed from the knuckle but will snap back against the boss on the case if you're not careful. Elsewhere on this site are exploded view diagrams, not sure what year you have but they're fairly straightforward.

Soooooooooooo, make reference marks on shaft and knuckle, pull the c-clip, remove knuckle, clean, blast, plate, realign marks and reinstall knuckle, replace c-clip - done? With no fear of loseing the tension/prelode of the interior kickstarter spring? Too easy - Sweet****************************************
Thanks guys!!!

Hi, I have an 82 125 XC. I had to take off the left side case to check the clutch and am not quite sure the proper procedure to preload the return spring. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Chuck

Sorry, return spring on the kickstarter. I assume there is a position where the shaft will stay stationary (not spin) and only return when turned past a certain point.

If you search on the forum there is a link to you tube vid of someone re fitting/tensioning a k/start assy. I know its here Ive seen it but I cant remember where to find it to post a shortcut!

Thanks Kev, I found the video but the mechanism is a bit different than on the 125. On the bigger bike there was a plate on the case with a notch where a pawl would catch so the spring wouldn't completely unwind, and the kickstarter wasn't slamming into the case. I don't see that on the 125 although there is probably some procedure that does the same. Just can't get my head around it.
