    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Remote Speedo Function Switch and Extender

I built a 5" harness extender so I can relocate my speedo higher up easily.

While I had the speedo unit off the bike, I opened it up for cleaning and to extend the function switch to a more convenient location on the handlebars or top clamp. I have brought out a wire that when grounded, will change the speedo display.

If you interrupt the Speedo signal to the unit when you press the switch, it will permit changing the display while on the move.

So I am set up to relocate the speedo to a better position, and more conveniently operate it while moving also.

Now waiting for the fairing and handguard/riser/top clamp solution to get worked out and in my hands to complete the project. It is far enough along that most anyone can do this.

The extender is not required for the remote function switch. If you want to build that, the part number info is earlier in the same thread I linked to above.
 
I had further thought about the wiring and figured I should be able to ground the speedo signal safely rather than break the circuit.

I wired up a 1N914 switching diode to one side of the speedo signal for isolation and another diode to the function switch, connected the cathode ends (banded ends) together, and now only run 2 wires up the handle bar switch. A ground wire and a wire from the diodes. This allows the use of common SPST momentary switches.

A quick test spinning the front wheel in the garage tonight shows that it works. You need to hold the switch for a second or 2 and the display changes while I see 4 or 5 mph on the display. I expect that it will work OK at any speed as the switch will clamp the voltage from the speedo sensor to nearly the same low voltage (0.7V). I have not measured the sensor output at any speed, but it is working so far, good enough for me!

In case anyone does not look at the ADVRider Husky 610 thread I am posting a pointer to the latest work on my speedo solution(s).

My stock speedo became unreliable shortly after I mounted it on the new Lynx dashboard. So I got a trail Tech Vapor computer unit and installed it, covered the old speedo hole and then installed 12V LED assemblies for all the indicators except headlight on, which is useless to me.

It is all in the Husky Speedo thread where I have all the related changes consolidated. There is lots of detail for those who need it, plus part numbers for those who may want to do similar some day.

The extension I made came in handy - just cut off the speedo end connector and put on new connectors for the indicators and Vapor unit.

The only part left undone is the coolant sensor. It is really tight under the tank (hose wise) and looks like a 1" dia coolant sensor might barely work. I have a 3/4" dia sensor in my kit which would only work at the bottom outlet on the right side radiator, near the exhaust which I am not excited about. Also would have to lengthen the sensor wire about 1 foot. Now about ready to head off to Death Valley in 2 weeks for 14 days of getting to know my TE610 up close and personal, along with 1 tent overnighter.

Next project - HDB top clamp. guards, mirrors on an underbar mount stabilizer with suitable guide pin mount.
