• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Riding near Salem, OR?

I am looking to move to the Salem area of Oregon and was wondering where to ride. I am also curious if there are any issues with riding on your own land (I am coming from CA, where there are always problems, even on your own land). I would like to know some legal and ... more popular riding spots in a 50-100 mile area.

All kinds of riding in the PNW. Not sure about the immediate area around Salem, but within 100 miles, there are more than a handful of places to ride trail.

Look up the Tillamook State Forrest OHV Trail Map
There is also Hood River
Rock Hill (In Salem I believe)
Trask Forrest
and so on, and so on....

I think the only issue with riding on your own land would be noise in an incorporated area with a noise ordinance. If your bike is around 94-96db and in a rural area I don't think there could be any problem. You might not win any popularity contests with certain people, but do your really care?

Like Blake says, lotsa riding and on top of that, Salem has about the best Husky dealer anywhere.

I don't think that my 500 could ever be 96db. What about areas to camp/ride the wife & kids ride quads. Thanks for the info. Does it really rain every day?

Tons of places... Brown's Camp in the Tillamook State Forrest is the best place for camping with easy riding for families / quads. There are established camp sites, or primative camping anywhere you wish.

And no, it doesn't rain EVERY day...

Dave, Upper Nestuccu OHV (Willamina OR) is close north west towards the coast, shotgun creek, Hucklberry OHV south east, Hoo Doo (santiam pass), Cline Butte, East fort rock to the East, There are lots of choices. Welcome to Oregon.

In Oregon you can go up to the snowy mountains to escape the rain, most of the time..;)
.....ACROSS the mountains that is :)

Stop into Bills in Salem, get to know the Applegate Rough Riders trail club, attend some OMRA offroad events, try some of the official OHV areas in the Tillamook forest and over the hill in central Oregon, maybe try out the dunes and Albany MX.... by then you will have a good sampling.... and as Kelly says, give us a shout and you can join us for a ride.

Its a great area up there in the PNW ... I used to ride north of OR in WA ... The northern side of the Mount ST Helens area ... Its the Gifford Pinchot National Forrest (GPNF) ... really good riding on mountians and big foot hills ... A little dangerous and remote but the lower altitudes have some campgrounds ... Cat creek area is very good and Blue Lake is just a few miles north of there ... Its a few miles away but you might venture up there some day ... There might be some back roads that push up into this area from OR ... GPNF might extend into OR ...

Give me a shout if you move up. The closest is Upper Nestucca which is about 45 min from Salem. Lots of intermediate trails with a few that ore OK for beginners. Only primitive camping areas though - no facilities. Brown's Camp has more facilities but is 90 minutes away and is usually much more crowded. If you like more open trails and an environment where the local Sheriff's Department actually makes you feel like they want you there, the areas over by Bend are a blast to ride and depending where you camp there could be some facilities. Keep in mind when I say facilities I'm talking about picnic tables, out houses and no running water. If you are into XC events (ranging from fun to brutally fun!) there are many scattered throughout the year that are within a few hours drive. If you like MX there is the Albany track just 30 minutes away. And you will get used to rain riding - I have grown to like it better then dust!
