  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Shifter no longer returns to center

86 WR 250

After a trip to some proper riding grounds, I unloaded the husky from the truck and went to go ride. The problem is that I notice that If I up shift the lever stay up, if I down shift the lever stays down. so while riding you have to gently push it down then shift again with out accidentally shifting the opposite direction. What's odd is that if it's in neutral and not running I can feel the spring returning it to center with my hand if I move it up and down. I don't have a spare clutch cover gasket or patience to take off the clutch cover again. (everytime I do so the kick start assembly falls out and I have to rewind the spring which for me is about a 2 hour process with lots of swearing and skin lossage) Last time I did it was to replace all the bearings and seals on the clutch cover and related parts.

I'm asking for suggestions or at least thoughts on what could be the issue. Also, is the shifter stuff located between the right case and clutch cover? I can't tell from the manual I use. Also, I don't even know what parts are related... http://www.halls-cycles.com/images/PDF/Husqvarna .PDFs/1980-1989/86_all-2st_models-2.pdf

Just asking for some guidance or suggestions.

Thanks.

When you take the clutch cover off do not remove the kick start lever but take the gear lever off and push on the gearshift shaft in as you remove the cover .
This keeps everything where it should be.
The kickstart stuff stays in the clutch cover and the gearshift stuff stays in the engine.
There is a pin in the clutch cover and it has to go into the gearshift return spring the correct way for it to work.
Can be a pain to get right.
If you have a clutch cover gasket with the hole in it for the pin then you can see where the spring goes.
If the pin is tapped too far into the clutch cover then it misses the spring.
If the pin sticks out of the cover too far then it drags on the gearshift [ leaves a mark ].
Cheers Mike

Spring 26 can give trouble if it's damaged or falls off.

Hey Dukkman do you know where to buy spring 31?

Sorry Speedie the only places I know are Ebay and Marks.

I had the same problem with my bike, would only select 1st and 2nd. Changed the gear selecter spring #31 part #1611 692-01. Try Steve www.huskydoggg.com he has them for $8.00 +p&h or Phil www.husqvarna-parts.com for $22.00 +p&h.

Woops
It's 4am and I have just realized that I jot it wrong.
Have confused 2 different bikes.
Both the kickstart AND the gearshift levers stay on their shafts and come off with the clutch cover.
Sorry

That actually makes a lot of sense to keep the starter lever on...

Thanks for all this info!

Has anyone reused these paper clutch cover gaskets with any luck? The current one is about 4 months old. Also, read a thread about the torque of the clutch cover being important. Does any one know what that torque value is? Or is "90º past tight" good enough?

So I finally was able to take it apart and the spring looked bent to crap.

So I got a new spring in the mail and I'm not sure how it mounts so I drew a diagram in paint is it A) or B) and if it's B how in bloody hell do you get it on? A seems like there is too much play if it is in position A. I won't be able to mess around with it for about 2 weeks. So I'm more or less trying to think of how it needs to go together.

Another helpful hint; When the spring is on the shift link and you're ready to install the side case. Move the shift link back with you finger towards the swing arm bolt. This will allow the spring pin that's in the side case to "land" right in the open spot of the spring. That way you avoid damaging the new spring and you wont have to cuss! I would re-use the gasket if it's in good shape. Just put a thin film of sealant on both sides of it. Just snug down the side case screws. Most of the engines I build have had the case screws way too tight. Then the side case actually warps, major bummer.

It's definitely pic B & you can do it insitu, the main thing to remember is to locate the ends properly as it only fits oneway & make sure that the clutch cover pin is located between the spring ends when you put it back together (mine is a pain to install & get right).
I am just guessing but by the looks of your original spring shape the pin has been located in the wrong place as it looks just like mine kept ending up before I worked out how to insatll it properly (hours of stuffing aroud & pissing me off & lost time on the trail).
Enjoy,
Speedy.
