• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Shifter Shaft 73 WR250

Gord

Husqvarna
AA Class
I'm looking for the short shifter shaft that goes through the case cover on my 73 WR250. Splines on one end, slot on the other. Are there any NOS left of these. Mine is worn and I want to replace it, or repair it.
Below this is a 'transmission swaps' post I put up a few days ago. I'm having a SACHS 5 gears with 6 neutrals thing going on with my Husky that never happened until this past summer. Upon advice from others, one on this board, I have come to find the union between the shaft coming out of the transmission and the short shaft going through the case cover is sloppy. Before I go buy another transmission, I would like to start with the sloppy shifter shaft.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks

check the de-tent under the gearbox hasn't come undone, thus not holding the selector drum in the correct position .

Thanks, It's the first thing I checked. Even changed the spring in the detent to a heavier one just to see if that would help. No change.

Those shift shafts turn up on Ebay from time to time...in "good" used condition.
3 other thoughts:
> You may be able to have a welder build up the worn areas, and then carefully grind/file to fit. Although I can't imagine that "weld" would be stronger then the original Swedish steel.
> On one of mine, I carefully flat filed a shim to take up the lateral play of the shaft relative to the clutch cover. Just be 100% sure when you tighten the clutch cover the shaft is still free and not binding.
> Also check that the shaft is not wobbling in a worn clutch cover itself. If so, a re-bush or cover swap may help.

Thanks Richard. I'm lucky to have a great welder who I work with who is also a Vintage bike restorer. Our idea is to preferably build up weld on the short shaft. I am also replacing the cover as I had my clutch adjuster come right through the cover at the RR ride in MA. Thought I tightened it, and the clutch nut enough, but apparently not so. Luckily Craig Hayes helped me in the pits and I was able to get it back together, adjust it, patch the hole in the cover and keep going.
How did you hold the the shim you filed in place? Weld?

I see a NOS shift shaft on Ebay today...enter Vintage Husqvarna in search.
Re: The shim...it just slips on the end of the shaft...takes up the "in-out" play of the shaft relative to the case.
As mentioned...just make sure it doesn't take up TOO much play and binds when the clutch cover is tightened.

Ok, got it. Can anyone point me in the right direction to a vendor who carries the associated seals for the shifter and kicker shafts for my new cover? 1973 WR250.
Thanks again Steve.
