  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Should I buy a TE310R

Hello,
I need your help. I posted on ADV rider and it was suggested that I post here.
I have a Yamaha WR250R that i am very happy with but i was looking for a lighter bike to get better off-roading.

My local dealer has a new (40 miles) 2013 TE310r that is $6250.00 out the door.

I took a test ride and the bike felt great except for serious lack of power!!! The dealer said they would NOT do a ECU reflash, that it is illegal for them to do it.

My question is how reliable are these bikes? I have heard of woodruff key problems. I do ride by myself sometimes and I do not want to be stranded.

Besides removing all the emission garabage, I would have to have the bike lowered a bit.

Should I just keep my WR250R or are these amazing bikes?

$6250 seems a little high on the price for a used '13.
Where are you located?

They are never going to be as reliable as a WR250R ....not even an WR250F

OTOH they are lighter and snappier than an uncorked WR250F and will blow the doors off a WR250R.

Be advised they do not do road work as well as a WR250R.

Depends what you want.

If you can get the engine/exhaust/ecu to us, for around $1-1.5k we can make the engine bullet proof and have hp (not bhp) close to a WR450.

My dyno run showed 29.6 for the 310. With just headwork, valves and pipe (w/silencer and sa) you can get 40+?

Oh, okay, misread your post. No, we modify the crankshaft, put new valves in, port the heads, modify the exhaust and tune the ecu. After that, thanks to you, the Powercommander is now available which can be radically modified to adjust the increased fuel and air through the engine. Brake hp should be around 35.5 (42 at the crank). It's close to the hp of a stock 450, and yields tremendous torque off the bottom.

I have both bikes; WR250R and 13 TE310R. The WR is a superb little adventure bike and I use it for multi-thousand mile rides. The TE310 can't do that. But for local trail riding including some pavement at 50 to 55 mph it's the TE! Just no comparison off road. The TE is a Tool! Mine has the full Zip Ty treatment but my hours are still low so can't report on durability yet. But I trust Tinken, Ty and Danny at the shop and think for my trail use the bike should last a long time. You just won't believe how well the 310 handles . I paid less than $5000 new for mine so your dealer is way high . Shop around. With all my mods I am just a few bucks more into it vs your quoted price. You should be able to do a lot better.

What crankshaft modifications does the TE310R need???

I am glad for a response from somebody that owns both bikes! Was the $5000.00 out the door with taxes and licence?

I think it was $4999 before local taxes. As for the mods, Tinken at Zip Ty could explain better. They do some custom machining to get more oil flow to the main bearings and maybe the wrist pin. Head was ported and valves changed out to eliminate any valve stretching. Call Zip Ty Racing.

Not sure where you're located but $6250.00 sounds high. I paid $5,600 OTD in February for a 2014 TE-310R with 0 miles.

That price included full emissions removal, power-up, map 3 loaded, etc. Dealer even tossed in a cool red Husky umbrella (last one he had).

Don't know how much you need it lowered but my younger son complained about the height so bought a Seat Concepts low seat for him to use and that seemed to solve the problem.

Even with the thinner foam the Seat Concept seat is more comfortable than the stock plank - plus it retains the full travel. Good luck.

Hello Angus,

I appreciate the information!

I am in Southern California. This does not look so good...high price and I am stuck with full emission removal and finding somebody to re-flash the ecu.
