    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Hello gentlemen,

assembled the shafts yesterday wanting finally to close up the engine. Inspected all gears and found the third gear a little more worn then I remembred.

I am having a little bit of a hard time to decide whether to put this in or try to source a new one instead. I guess it should be replaced, but the dogs are only slightly worn, however the gear surfaces have some pits in them per the pic. No cracks though.

I was thinking of using this one to get running and then source a new one as a spare, but thought I could get some good opinions from the community first.

If your camera has a macro mode, set the light to center sensing not whole frame and use a flash or get some more light on it maybe someone can comment. I had a bunch of good photo programs back in windows 95 but not any more.

If it is the one I think it is it is only available because it was in use in the 410 and 610 engines for another 10 or so years after leaving this section of cafehusky. It is a tough call the dogs go into another gear and the teeth ride against a different one.

Took the gear to the materials lab at work just to settle my curiosity on the failure mode. What I have on my gear is appearantly "progressive hertzian fatigue and macropitting". The reasons are a too high (cyclic) contact stress, inadequate lube film or a too low fatigue limit on the base material surface.

I wonder how they hardned these back in the day, Looking at my surfaces the hardning depth was quite shallow as far as I can figure.

Oh well, ordered two new gears today. Will keep the ones I have just in case. Probably won't afford another engine restoration near term so If I shoot this engine I guess I'll be driving something else then :)

I will use an oil with EP additives I think when gears arrvie and I assemble the engine.

P.S He showed me a "Gear failure atlas" which was very comprehensive with some nice pictures to identify your failure, and then why it happens and how to avoid it. Will see if I can scan some of it in if anyone would be interested. Nice for us that are not experts in the field of metallurgy

Got some new gears today. Hopefully they will last a while.

Now changed 6 gears total in engine and everything is more or less mint inside the case. Hopefully I do not forget to put oil in before I take my first ride (yes it has happened :) )
