  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

silencer/custom pipe help

Husqvarna
C Class
I am about done with my build. The bike is a 78 cr 250. I am wanting to make it street legal, but right now its just so loud. I wouldn't wanna kick start the bike at an outdoor cafe or something and just annoy everyone. Some noise is OK but this is too loud.

Are there any options for a custom pipe or silencer? I do not mind something that is new and not of the proper period. I thought of getting a custom, real simple down pipe built. I have zero knowledge of exhausts so any info will help

Dont forget to make sure the fins have all the rubber blocks and even make some fat rubber bands by cutting an old tube and stretching them over the head to minimize the "ring ding"

Where do you want to be street legal. A brake light that works when the engine is off and a high beam indicator that is blue are often needed. The sound issue, do you need an annual inspection sticker in your state province or country?

Just a thicker walled pipe will make a good bit of difference. You can put a piece of inner tube on the silencer to get an idea of where the noise is coming from. There is some purpose designed snorkel which is the inner tube technique taken to the next level. Have you been to an event like a hare scramble or enduro and observed and listened to modern bikes. They have power valves which don't let the exhaust pulse out until the piston is farther down the stroke and the pulse is a lot less noisy. As far as the ringing fins go stuffing things in there doesn't seem to make much difference for me. I can see that the 500 air cooled two stroke for example has an aluminum bar of sorts cast into it. How many welded in solid little bars would get you how much results I can't say.

I had some of these things registered but I lived where if you bought it with a plate and it wasn't 10 or more years old you just got a plate. So if the first owner managed to get a plate I was set unless I got a citation for something. Amazingly I never got a citation a warning to wipe the mud off the plate yes but usually if they saw a plate they let me go as they didn't have a no registration, no insurance stop like they were hoping for. no mirror, no dot tires, no blinkers, no side reflectors etc etc.
