  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Small Husky TE Weak Spot?

This last weekend I did a 50 mile high desert trail ride, w/my '05 TE510. We had a mix of 1st/2nd gear rocky windy single track sections w/water running down the trail, 3rd/4th gear killer whoops(my legs are killing me still), long sandy hill climbs, 4th/5th gear sand washes , and even got to let the reins loose on a short gravel road stretch up to 78mph.

Well, some where near the end the rear brake felt funny, but kept going. When back at the truck noticed a rock apparently caught the bracket that holds the brake pedal and smashed it back into the swingarm and cracked the bracket.
I've smashed tips before (& have busted off my TE tip) but never had something like this happen on a bike before.

Oh, something else strange happened too........I had ZERO pop/die issues in the tight tachy stuff. I may have got my carb right finally.

You should consider it a one off trail damage thing, I dont think you will find any or a trend of this damage among the riders here.
When you said your symptom I thought you did the same as me,,,I crunched up into a large rock, just kind of semi tipped into it, after the impact I felt the same weird brake feeling you did,,,but mine was an impact to the master cylinder, a few inches higher and bent the 2 frame tabs in along with the master cylinder so that it was scraping the swingarm similar to your damage, for me only the master cylinder assy and not the brake assy was pushed in.
You got a tougher one, looks some welding will be required on the linkage mount tab/bracket, dang these things take a thrashing. Also a couple of weeks later after I bent everything back I realized the master cyclinder impact had pushed a dent all the way into the inner cylinder and the piston was binding,,,,I had to replace the master cylinder, bummer but the cost of doing "biz" (having fun). Best of luck, get her to good metal fab guy should not be a very big issue repair.
 
guess this was more a little ride report than anything. In....I don't know...over 20k miles of trail riding, I've smashed footpegs, broke brake tips off, bent brake pedal almost 180 back, but not this.
Funny thing is I can't even remember hitting a rock that hard on this ride

Got it straightened back in place, but for sure has to be welded before I can safely ride again.
I'll bring it in to work w/me, there's a couple guys in our shop that can fix it up for me.
 
all the same type stuff with mine too (for the rock riders of the this site), I do think that the brake pedal tip is a weak spot and have been welding the inside of the tips since 06, those I have just stripped off while threading rocks. The inside weld keep the tip on is a tip saver but now the pedal assy is at risk for bending and occaisionally does even with the brake snake (there is that bit of cable slack). Hope you get it dialed in quickly and get er back on the trail!!
Another one you mentioned the foot pegs on these thing are kind of soft, I have replaced at least 3 (that I remember) in the past couple of years and my current right side one is tweaked into an odd position now, I have sometimes thought that this is engineered in (softer steel) to make them sacrificial rather than having the frame foot peg mountings get all bent up(???) Again best of luck and get that horse back on the trail!!!

(PS for a weak spot FYI, I am the sole husky goofball that has had my 08 sight glass get shattered, to me that nice viewing addition is a real weak spot without any type of cover or shroud device, mine is currently a solid disc of aluminum, my oil gets changed enough to not need to monitor it just dump it clean the filters and pour in 1.7L, ready to roll)
 
OUCH!

I have looked at that area a number of times and wondered why an enterprising fabricator, like Kelly for instance, hasn't come up with a spiffy little guard for it. There are plenty of bolts to tie into.
Maybe someone is making such a guard and I haven't seen it?
