    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

SMR 510 vx TE510 gearing question

HI All,

I am closing in on my first dual sport and pretty much settled on 510. now the question is should it be TE510 or SMR510

I want all around bike, 50 - 50 street and dirt, nothing crazy or extreme. I also plan to get second set of rims and swap them based on where i am about to head out...

my concern is, if TE is geared to low for ocasional highway romp..

is internal gearing for TE and SMR the same? only final drive different? or there are more internal differences?

The internal gearing on both bikes is the same, however you mentioned wanting two sets of wheels. SMR wheels will bolt onto a TE but TE wheels won't bolt onto an SMR. SMRs have a shorter swingarm and a radial mount front caliper that won't work with the dirt wheels. Hope this helps.

this confirms my plan! I will also have to get a lowering link and raise forks up a bit...TE is just so damn tall for me...

any issues with lowering on the cheap?
 
The SM also has a counter balancer in the engine which the TE does not have and tends to smoothen out the vibrations evident with a high comp single slug engine.
 
I think if its 50/50 def go the TE and street it. Its easier to make a dirt bike ridable onroad than a street bike ridable off road IMO.
 
I went through this dilemma a couple of years ago. Had a TE510 that I rode off road and had a SM kit to turn it into a supermoto bike. I found that it took me about an hr each time to swap back and forth. Can be quicker but I had to swap chains the accomodate the different sprockets for dirt and street use. In the summer when I wanted to ride a lot I spent almost as much time wrenching as riding. And having a "do everything" bike is great in theory but it will be a jack of all trades and expert of nothing. I sold the TE and bought a proper SM bike and an MX bike. There are some great deals out there on leftover SM and dirt bikes so the incremental cost between having 2 purpose built bikes and 1 bike and spare wheel sets and brakes etc isn't that great. Aren't the WR125's selling for like $4,000 these days? And '09 SMR510's pretty cheap too? Factor in the spare SM wheels and big brake to convert your TE and it's only a few grand more to have 2 brand new purpose built bikes that will work WAY better at what they were built for than the do anything bike.

I picked an SMR450 and an '08 TC250 for my bikes. Couldn't be happier! The counter balancer in the SMR is a HUGE plus over the TE IMO. And my TC is great MX bike and does great in the bush.

Agreed! The TE is a great bike, it does everything pretty well and will give you lots of good times! Enjoy!

23mm is a dirt offset tho.

I just crudely measured my 09 450 SMR triple clamp and they look to be 15mm offset.
so if a TE clamp is 20mm or 25mm, thats way too much and will make the bike twitchy at speed.

I cant get an accurate measurement without completely removing the clamp tho.
