  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

SMR 511 dirt wheels

Bit of a strange question, but I'm looking to get some dirt wheels set up so I can quick change and head out off road.

I cant seem to find any info on what wheels to get? Does any body know what hubs will fit, and if I need spacers?

Has anybody done this before? I've done a search and also tried to find what TE 511 riders have done when switching to the road but no luck!

I think any front going back almost 10 years on most any 125-510/511 will work and almost any 4 stroke rear. Someone correct me if I'm wong. There are several front and rear rotor sizes. The 2 stroke real wheel from like 08 and older will not work as the sprocket offset is different.

Yeah, I'm not sure.

I found this on a smr thread:

Wheels:

#NOTE: The 449/511 use radically different hubs to the old 450/510 models, they are also different to the TE449/511 hubs (NFI how, but they're different part#'s). Brake surface offset, spoke lacing pattern and a few other things differ significantly so keep this in mind when ordering aftermarket wheels as 99% use hubs designed for 450/510's.

*My re-laced rear wheel uses a 5" rear Excel rim drilled to suit the new design OEM hubs (even then I had issues). I'm currently exploring a few avenues such as a 16.5" rim to lace up to my spare SMR511 front hub. I'll update this as I go.

So I had a look through the parts catalog:

The rear wheel hub part number is the same for both the TE and the SMR - 8A00H1368. I don't know much about dirt, but that should mean I could order any aftermarket TE rear wheel and it would fit, right?

The front wheel hub part numbers are not the same.

BUT: Looking at the part numbers, it looks as if the hub sleeve itself is the same (maybe? It doesn't list an individual part number for it), but some of the components of the hub 'kit' are different.

Namely, instead of a set of bearings, there is: front rim 21', and the circlip is different. But all the other components, including the spacers, are the same.

So what does this all mean? Can anybody elaborate on what I'd need to do with the front? Could I buy TE aftermarket replacement wheels and have them fit?

The TE wheel will bolt onto the SMR no problems, the issue you'll run into is with sorting out the brake disc spacing and getting enough clearance from the radial caliper. Add to that grabbing a handful of front brake on the dirt using a 4 pot radial caliper you'll be losing the front quite a bit!

So you suggest a full system then? The front wheel complete with brake disk and caliper?

Find another front end. Full dirt set up. Wheel, forks, brake, master cylinder/lever. I have recently seen some part out stuff on CL over in my area (PA). I dont think it would take you too long to find the parts and nothing lines up like stock when it comes to brakes and axles, etc.

The old style wheels will bolt right up I'm running 06 WR250 wheels on my TC449 for ice no issues. Yes the spacing is slightly different but all you have to do is correctly space everything out no big deal. I've ran many older style husky wheels on my 449/511 bike no issues for years now. You can see in the photos the older ugly hubs but they work great. I powder coated the spokes and rims.

The wheels will fit but you'll have issues with the caliper clearing the spokes on top of the spacing of brake discs.

I did the same thing with my SMR. I bought a complete 21" front wheel from my dealer and threw on an adventure 17" rear tire. I didn't have any clearance problems although I've heard of some that did. Don't know what's different about mine. I think I still have that front wheel in my garage somewhere. If you want it, shoot me a pm

Correct with a 320mm disc up front and a large 100mm radial caliper you may have some clearance issue to work with up front using a 21" wheel. All depends on the thickness of the caliper and wheel offset.

Thanks Darkside, I appreciate it. Unfortunately I'm in Aus and I think the shipping would be outrageous.

So you got a complete wheel set from your dealer and that worked? I might look into that then.

Did you hook up a wheel, brake, caliper set? I couldn't care less how ugly it is, as long as it works!

Also, what do you use for a catch can? I've seen some people using plastic bottles and zipties but does anybody supply something a little less poverty stricken? I'm going to start racing next month but I can't find anything.

Yes. it was a complete Husky wheel. I drilled out and tapped the rotor mounting holes to accept the 320 rotor. The Brembo caliper just cleared the spokes by a hair.

Wow, that sounds precise. I tend to muddle my way through fixing/adapting things and generally f*ck it by about 10%!

I know this is an old post. I have an SMR and did exactly what you are asking. Message me if you still have questions.
