  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Spark Arrestor

Has anybody figured out how to get rid of the stupid whistling noise the spark arrestor makes on the 08's. Some places I'm going to be riding this year require one,,, but I can't stand the noise that it makes.

Well since nobody replied to this,,,I'll take it as no. I did a little playing around with mine and got it to stop whistling.

What did you do? :excuseme:

This is how I got rid of the chirp/rattle from the spark arrestor. I took a sharp center punch and stippled the spark arrestor until the spark arrestor fit very tight into the can and the snap ring would just squeeze into its slot. If you get it too tight just hit it with some emery cloth until it fits. If it ever loosens up just hit it again lightly with the punch. I also put a stainless snap ring in place of the steel one so it wouldn't rust in.

I actually drilled the spot welds out that hold the screen on,took the screen off, shortened the screen up quite a bit, put it back on,and re welded it. Doesn't look the prettiest because I used a bench grinder to clean up the welds instead of using a lathe, but it works and it fixed the problem,so I guess thats all that matters, that and you can't see the welds or grinding marks anyways when it is installed.

My fix used fine strands from stranded copper wire. Stuck a few 1/2 inch long piece striaght in around the primeter of the arrestor while pushing it back in. The copper is fairly mallable so it flatened a bit to make a tight fit. Then cut off any ends from stopping the snap ring from going back in.

I just hit the horn button when it whistles on my 09 so I can't hear it..........kinda like turning up the stereo to cover a sqeaky ball joint

That is pretty ingenious! :)

I used some alum printer sheet, mimograph I think it was, cut a couple of strips and inserted as shims. Takes up the slack great.

Ken, I like your idea of stippling. Where did you find a stainless clip?

I ordered them from McMaster Carr. I will dig up the number for you. The stainless clip is slightly thinner than the original so I had to re-stipple to make it tight. Ken

Stippled mine as well after Joliet posted his pics a while back on TT and my tin foil shim failed to hold up. No more rattling since doing it but still have a chirp. Mine chirps the most when cold and warming up, don't even notice it any more.

I made this little beauty up & she works well. Clean it up well & add just a smear of high temp silicon all around & let it dry

I love all of the Husky ingenuity. I fixed my chirpy too, I took it off. A bit louder but when it has to go on, I will employ one of these fixes.

I did something similar only used a portion of a flat .002 or .003 feeler gauge around 50% of the perimeter to shim it tight.

I asked at my local shop about fixing the rattling Spark arrestor and was told it was SUPPOSED to rattle to keep it from carboning up and being difficult to remove.

Nice one. About how much did you end up cutting off of the screen? Do I need a welder to get it reassembled?

Some backstory -
I own a '09 TE 450 and have been putting up with the chirp for too long. It stops when the SA is removed, but I gotta have the SA cause it's matchbox city where I like to ride. I've researched this for days (lots of promising stuff) but to no avail. I've noticed it occurs whenever I suddenly release the throttle completely and it doesn't matter which RPM I'm at, as soon as I release the throttle suddenly and fully, it lets out these infuriating ear piercing chirps. After hours of tinkering I'm thinking it has everything to do with back pressure and the SA screen and little to do with its tightness and fit. No matter how tight I wedge that sucker in there, it still chirps (even without the C clip installed). Time to break out some power tools.
