  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Is there any way to power up the speedo/rev counter WITHOUT having the engine running ? '06 TE 450 if it matters.

What genius thought that one up :banghead:
 
Stock - no.

The schematic shows power to it I believe so there must be another wire/signal that is keeping the display off.


The bike would need an on/off switch or the battery would die. Suppose the one on the handle bars could have been used... not sure why they didn't do that - maybe they were worried people would leave the switch in the on position, that is what I do.
 
I figured that would be the answer but I thought I'd ask anyway.

It seems a silly design to me - as you say, there is an on/off switch so why not use that to power up the display and have something like a timer or something to turn the display off if you leave the switch on. Does the speedo contain a battery to keep it's setting (clock etc.) or does it use the main bike battery ?

Just seem a bizarre way to do it.

what do you need the rev counter for if the bikes not running?

Not sure if that was a genuine question or not....I will assume yes so here goes :D

It's all one unit, it's silly to have to turn the engine on simply to, say, read the odo or set the clock. Very silly indeed.
 
On the '06 610 the headlight and speedo are powered from the battery and so the engine doesn't have to be running. It's my understanding that they changed this in '07 or '08 to run off the stator. I wonder why the 450 is different from the 610? Believe me when I say I'm an electrical idiot but can you change the power source to the battery so it comes on with the key?

There's no key on the bike but there is a power switch.

Actually if you look at the schematic the big red button on the handle bars is either open, or it grounds a lead to the electronic box... so it is not a power switch.

They easily could have made it a power switch too though but that would be more wires.

yeah it was a genuine question :) sorry its just on mine the time stays set even after its switched off so i dont need to reset it again..but then again the only thing that i consider the oem unit is good for is an hour meter for servicing and the max speed readout for bragging rights :thumbsup:

you might notice if you push down the kickstarter (with the decompressor pulled) the display lights up for about 10 seconds ..enough to read the odometer maybe ?

No worries.

I had seen the kicker thing. It just seems a really really stupid thing to do when you have a battery on the bike (I could see it on non-battery bike maybe and even then, you could incorporate a battery in the unit itself) to not have the display show when the bike is not running.
 
FYI, the Euro3 versions that have the keyed ignition powers on the speedo with the key turn... along with the hour meter. I've left my key on a few times and now have many more hours on the meter than actual... urrrg.
