standard te310 exhaust 80db - errrr nope

chaps just preparing for my first enduro on my 2010 te310..

the bike must comply with the following so the rules state...
Maximum sound level is 94 dBA at 0.5m
and mean piston speed of 11 m/sec.

i just tested it with a sound meter (cheapo one) and its giving me anywhere between 98 - 102 db standing at the back around 1/2 m back... bike is ticking at 2100 - 2300rpm
i tried removing the spark stopper in the rear as it rattles loads but makes no difference really...
the odd thing is the side of the can is stamped /engraved that the exhaust performs to 80db for my bike....
the cat & o2 sensors is still connected... bike has done only 50miles...

am i recording the readings wrong .. im confused

hopefully someone can help as dont want to turn up only to be turned away??

Your cheapo meter sounds about right from what I'm seeing. I know a guy with a TE450 who blew well over the max sound level at a local event. They let him go, but he's since put an FMFQ on his bike. My TE310 is pretty loud for sure, no meter to gauge it, but certainly over 80dBA! I pulled the cat & O2 on mine, but do run the S/A insert which I put a bead of high temp silicone around to keep it from rattling. Still. Quite loud. I had an FMF Q on my bike for a very short time and can tell you, you'll get the sound down to a respectable level. For the money, if sound is the only issue, look into the DB killer. The stock exhaust is hard to beat in my opinion, at least on the 310's.

not sure what you need to do for jetting or FI tweaks,but I put a DB killer from husqvarna that is designed for the 310,I had to custom machine mine and can snap a few photos as the TXC250 exhaust has a sharp bend on the last few inches of the pipe where the 310 has a straight pipe right to the end,brought my bike down to 82 DB!!!

Most stock TE's i have seen at races blow about 92-96. 102 is CRF MX bike loud. Like irritatingly loud. 80db is super quiet for any motor. I've heard cars that are 80db.

OK I think i understand and am feeling a bit peed if this is the case..

I go to the dealers and finaly decide on a husky over other brands. The main dealer was informative & helpfull and knew exactly what type of competitions i was going to enter.. (he races a 450) so i now have a new bike that will not enable me enter the competitions i choose because its too loud, and is probable not road legal. and to add insult the bike is stamped up as producing 80db.. yet very clearly is nowhere near.
To me this seems wrong...
I have just been quoted £50 for the DB Killer but in my view Husqvarna should include this if they say the bike is 80DB??
My spark arrestor is just a tube 2" long no mesh just hollow tube held in the end of the can by a c Clip.... im wondering if this is wrong??

Fury great workmanship thank you for posting and you are correct my pipe is straight.. unfortunatley i only have a mig welder and am not sure this will be good enough to fabricate something up...

Cant beliveve ive got to fork out another £50 to buy the part.. and make my bike road & race legal.. then it will probably need a trip to be tuned.... it backfires/pops under decel badly at present but im hoping this is due to it not run in.. or perhaps something is missing from the exhaust...
I think the bike rocks lookswise, handling, cant judge performance as running in still.. it oozes class and the riding position for me (6FT) is spot on.. but its frustrating to think i got to spend more cash to make it legal... when i chose the husqy as its supposed to be more race ready to go?

Suggest you talk to your dealer and explain the situation, especially if you or they can show it doesn't blow the DB's it's suppse to from the factory. You may find they'll work with you on this as I'm sure others have complained as well. If not, call the Husqvarna customer service line and let them know your situation. Again, you may be surprised at what they're willing to do to correct the situation, but follow the proper channels first. It's worked for me on other issues. Husqvarna customer service is top notch. If I was going to race with the stock setup, you can bet I'd be on the horn if I couldn't pass the sound test based on a claim from the factory that should be below the acceptable sound requirements. My 2 cents.

not sure what you have in there to begin with,it may be a euro part of some sort,you wouldnt need to bend the DB killer I bought if you bought one,it comes made to fit the 310/250 TE,your only alternative is to get a different pipe that offers quiet tips without taking away power

im sure it does choke the bike up, need to pass a sound test at all of our events, never said I raced with it

In US sound is measured at 45 degrees and distance of 1 yard. In clear area as reeverberation of Bldg cuases louder and RPM is 1/2 max pwr RPM. (There is a btand year CC chart for this. The spinning spark screen and circlip cause much noise. Use center punch and "dimple "the spark inseert so it is tighter and also put some high temp silicone around the edge, let dry, then insert. do same for clip too as it spins and makes noise.
Did this on mine and I blew a 92DB and a 91DB and a 90DB at 3 races/3 diff testr machines. Same tests as Fury has gone to (same races)

No it aint 80 for sure. 70 DB is an average converdsation.

ok guys.. will speak with my dealer in the morning.... im sure he will help having just spent a small fortune in his shop.. bike & gear spare parts oil filters etc....

anyway i just pulled my end piece out.. fury it is just as your pictures and same size up to the point yours bends... 2" total length. its completely hollow just a tube... funnything is the end in the exhaust has cut edges like its been hacksawn off and edges filed.. now this may have been done in the factory???? can any one check?? can email a picture to some one for posting up??

i just found my DB killer parts
wifes going to kill me but the middle section of thin tubing from her vacume hoover handle the thin tube is almost a perfect fit.. wonder what difference this will make if i cut 8" and tack it to my end piece.... shes still not got over the cash i spent... just wait till i cut up the hoover!.. it may not be me visiting the dealers

The Husky part # for the dB Killer is 8000H0827. I think it only works on the 09 and up models, the ones w/ the cat in the mid pipe. There were significant changes done to the exhaust system for the 09 models. I think it will work w/ all the Arrow performance exhausts, but I'm not sure.

It works well to cut down the noise. As for power loss I have not really been able to test it due to the weather, but I guess because of its more restrictive nature I will loose some top end / max rpm HP, but on the other hand I will gain a bit of low to mid end torque, which is more practical for trail riding.

Anyway the minimal loss of HP is worth the noise reduction. I'm a big proponent of trading lightly both on the trail and the ears. This is the only way we will be able to preserve our riding areas. (Hopping off the soap box now... )

The 80db measurement is for a "drive by" test for road use where the sound meter is some distance away (50 feet away with vehicle driving by at 35 mph is what has been used in the USA, I think). For off-road use a different test is used with the meter close to the exhaust.

In the USA and Canada the bikes come with a spark arrestor (with a mesh screen) but in Europe I believe they come with the simple little tube. It lowers the noise slightly but not much. (I have one myself.) The long "db killer" is reportedly much more effective at sound reduction.

I agree with you that these bikes are too loud and that Husqvarna doesn't make it easy to quiet them down. The long db killer might be quiet enough but it doesn't have a spark arrestor and doesn't fit an '08.

ive got myself a proper sound testing kit to borrow tomorrow.. im guessing for an official reading fire it up ion the middle of the garden but what revs do i use or is it required to be tested at tick over??
which would be weird as its going to get much louder when revved..

The test requires that the meter be held in a position that is 45 degrees off the direction of the exhaust outlet, back and away. The meter sensor must be at 90 degrees to that, pointing to the back, and the meter must be 20 inches away from the tail pipe with a wind sock over the sensor. All these criteria are specified in the SAE Test Procedure, which is an ANSI internationally recognized test procedure, implemented in 1979.

The RPM specified by the Motorcycle Industry Council manual is a calculation of the stroke of the engine, resulting in half of the engine's red-line. Many use a vibrating wire type tach.

BTW, the 90 degree angle of the sensor is necessary to avoid "wind" pops from the air flow out the back of the bike. A seemingly small puff of air can send the reading into outer-space. Also, there must be no objects within 16 feet of the test bike, and the tester.

I'm the happy new owner of Rick Ramsey's 09 310. It has the DB Killer in it. I have the O2 sensor still in the pipe and have done a bit of tuning with iBeat version 1. I have been out riding, just today on hard packed snowmobile trails. IMHO, this bike RIPS! I have the FB 1 value set at 113.8 (orig 113) Yes, you can set it to tenths. It runs clean and strong (after a short warmup). Get the DB killer and tell Husky to pay for it. Thay had to have something in that pipe to get the 80 DB stamp. I'm an old guy but I have raced and can still twist it, but I think this bike setup as is will be a great trail bike. ( I wouldn't want to ride this bike without the DB Killer)

Super service from dealer!!

Called in to see my dealer (GH Motorcycles Colchester Essex) & talked over the problem with him..
we had a look at the other bikes 2009 te 250 310 450 & 510 & 2010 Te 250 all appeared to have a different exhaust baffle in the same can...

he made a few calls and appears that what my bike came with is all that is supplied on the 2010 although hes going to look into it further with Husky as 102 db is way too loud... anyway he gave me a longer baffle from his stores. It appears exactly like the item in the post from fury & rick ramsey link to try...

Great news is it fits like a glove and has reduced the noise level considerably.. its raining at the moment so i cant push out side to record the DB.... but it sounds like its going to hit the correct levels for the competition i want to enter... and road legal.. my guess its 90ish DB

Also spoke about the back fire.. it was suggested that i bring it in to his workshop where he will connect it up and tune it properly using I Beat... although the bigger baffle may help somewhat.. either way he wants to check it over and make sure all is good.
