  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Switching oil from 10w-60 to Rotella

Bike is an 08 510SMR used on the street only, no dirt, track or racing. Since I purchased the bike, I've been using Liquimoly 10w-60 simply because it is the only 10w-60 that I can find locally (at a bmw dealer down the street). I don't really like ordering online and waiting so that is why I've been going with this product instead of Motul. Plus they say its a pretty good oil. It's been costing me about $10/ quart and I've been doing changes every 700-750 miles along with a new high flow filter every change. The oil doesn't look too bad when it comes out.

Someone told me to look into the Shell Rotella line of oil, which can be had at Walmart for half the price of the Liquimoly. I see some people here are also using it in their bikes Financially, this would allow me to change the oil every 375-400 miles instead of the current 700-750 and maybe a new filter every other change. Would it be safe to use Rotella in my bike? If so, which kind? I see they have the T6 (5w-40), T (15w-40), and T5 (10w-40). Or should I stick with the 10w-60?

Thanks for your input.

Use either t6 or the t. I use the t in all my bikes and am satisfied. I buy it by the gallon. Shifting could be smoother but for the price im totally happy. Never had any engine troubles in any of my four strokes. In fact i ran a n expensive ester based maxima 5w 20 that was supposed to be so slippery it actually added power. Well in my 250f the engine noise was audibly louder switched back to rotella and she was smooth and quiet again.

Only been reading about it in posts for years (we don't have it in Oz). Only input is that many 4 strokers use it all the time with no engine, clutch or gearbox issues. Wish we had it here.
