  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Tall rider bike set up - a solution that helped me

Boogie

Husqvarna
Pro Class
I'm a tall guy at 6'3" with a long monkey arm wingspan of 6'8.5" (edited from 6'7"... my bad). I find it difficult to fit on most dirt bikes and feel very cramped. My 510 was dangerous in stock set-up because it encouraged my body position to be too far back when sitting and very unbalanced standing.

I've made a few changes that might help other tall riders...

First step to improve set-up was to install fastway pegs in low position and roll the bars forward in the clamps. I removed the stock bar risers as they don't help with getting body weight forward, they seemed to do the opposite.

The biggest problem with bars rolled forward in the standard husky clamp (with 5mm offset forward) was the ends of the grips angling up on the ends and hurting my hands/wrists. This was a small price to pay to be able to ride faster and more confident on the 510.

I searched ...forever... for a solution to move my bar clamps forward on the triple clamp. There is the nice looking xtrig clamp available for the husky that have different bar clamp mounting positions, the only problem is expense.

I gave up on the 510 set-up and put up with sore hands.

Picked up a new 310 a few weeks back which resurrected the "bar forward solution" search. Finally found a set of handle bar clamps from Enduro Engineering that work for the husky with a few small mods. They move the bars forward and up. Pic below. I just had to make sure the bars were rolled back so the grips were just behind the steering stem pivot point because if they are forward of this point... the bike "feels" unstable at speed.

So now on my 310 I have the fastway pegs in the low position and enduro engineering clamps. Feels great and I can ride faster and more confident with no sore hands/wrists. The 510 will get these clamps soon.

I hope this helps the taller riders out there...

I feel your pain, I'm 6'6" tall and have a 6'9" wingspan and a 38" inseam. My 09 WR250 has the best tall man ergos of any bike I've been on but I still use Fastway pegs, a Guts tall foam seat and a under-bar mount with Scotts steering damper. The steering damper and mount are kind of pricey. If you want to get some adjustability without a damper I used S-3 clamps on my trials bike which should also work on about any bike.

Damn, you'd need custom made everything! Even at my height and wingspan I can't buy a long sleeve shirt or suit off the shelf to fit.
The S3 clamps look good. I'll look into them for my 510. Might need an adapter made to fit the husky triple... Hhmmm.
I haven't tried a tall seat but keen to give one a go.
Cheers.

I am in a similar boat as I am 6'6" on a 511. But moving my handlebars forward was not the answer. I used a BRP upper triple clamp with the sub mount stabilizer clamps. To that I added 116mm Flexx bars which raised my bars up 2.5" up from stock but I needed them pulled back towards me. I lowered my forks pushing them all the way down in the triple clamps, this changed the geometry of the bike raking it backwards. I added a SeatConcepts custom tall seat cover which they made custom to me at 2.5" taller. My pegs have been lowered as well as my race sag to 115mm. I am able to ride through soft silt at high speeds across the desert without a steering stabilizer.

Cripes, you guys are lucky, with such seemingly easy fixes for your height. At least ya can put your feet easily on the ground, unlike those of us with "ducks disease" (shorter people), who come to a stop with flailing legs looking for a high spot to touch down on...
Sorry for the hijack...

Tinken, I think the BRP clamp moves the bar further forward (relative to stem) than the standard husky set-up anyway. I'm not sure how much, do you know?

I've got many different opinions on bar set-up and what "should" work for me. Most say use bar risers because I'm tall, a relatively tall enduro racer contradicted that and said use low bars with minimal sweep, no risers and roll then forward a tiny bit from neutral.

The strange thing is... my brother feels awkward on my bike and I do also on his. He has risers and the bars fairly neutral. He's only 1/2 inch shorter than me but his wingspan is more in proportion to his height. I've got an extra 2 inchs length per arm than him so maybe this thread title should read Tall rider with stupid long arms bike set up.

Thanks for the input guys.

Hmmm I too sort of suffer from the long arms thing. I mean heck, I can touch my knees without bending my back at all.

I do notice that my comfortable arm position does push me back on the seat some, and sliding up on the seat is OK but kinda cramped if it's a tight turn. I guess being just over 6'1" may be why it hasn't totally driven me nuts. I was going to try some simple risers first, but that setup is pretty sexy.

You are going to need longer cables to get the bars where you need them, that's the only thing stopping me from going any higher.

i'm up 2.5", how high do you need?

I'm curious to know your wingspans?... (measurement from fingertip to fingertip with arms stretched out).
Tinken you're 6'6", is your wingspan proportionate to this?
Rearwheelin, what about your height and wingspan?

Go on guys... get the tape measures out and line your arms up against the wall!?

The average correlation of height to wingspan is ... wingspan = height x 1.023 ....(based off this study) http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2006/bodyproportions.shtml ...

IMHO This correlation has got to affect where your bars feel comfortable and not just the standard reply of.... "you're tall, you need bar risers"

My current set up moves the bars forward approx. 3/4 inch and no more than 1/2 up. (photo angles are a bit deceiving)

6' 2 1/4"Tall. tip to tip 7' 1" ... I base my riding position on my stand up position , usually when sitting it works good too.

I have those 1.5" spacers that Motosportz sells, but they made the handlebars flex in a bad way.
