  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE 511 Valve Adjustment advise

Husqvarna
A Class
Hi all, I checked my valve clearance today and was after some help from the people in the know....

Bike is a 2013 TE511, with about 2,200 Km done. I service it (Oil and filters) about every 350-400K's, full synthetic used after 250K run in.

I rotated the engine to TDC using the two dots on the timing gears pointing to each other as a guide and measured from that position.

Left Inlet is .150mm
Right Inlet is .178mm

Left Exhaust is .203mm
Right Exhaust is .229mm

From my understanding, both inlet and exhaust are out of spec, inlet with too much play, and exhaust too tight..

Should I be concerned about this? I've read on here that heaps of people haven't needed to adjust their valves ever.

Thanks.

I would first make sure you have followed timing mark instructions for checking valve clearance and check them again..

with the 2 marks level with the Gasket surface ... you are right. With the rockerarm cover removed , you can see that both camshafts are off the valves. So in regards the right point of measurement you are ok.

how do you go about adjusting the exhaust valves? mine are tight. does the cam have to come out?

i would make the adjustments now! Im not sure if the 511 uses a shim style adjustment but if it does. Hot Cams Shim kit is a worthwhile investment. Buy a digital caliper and the shim kit. Then remove the shims on the valves you suspect to be off subtract the difference from what it is and what the spec is. Then replace with the proper shim. Re-measure and repeat until in spec. Your bike will start cold better then it ever has i promise.

The bmw/kymco/husky 449 and 511 engines use hemispherical (described as half balls in the WSM) shims. These are used in several bmw bikes and may be available at bmw motorcycle dealers. I have searched for aftermarket shim kits and don't believe they exist. I think you have to buy OEM.
