  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

I'm interested in information about the 2004 TE250........I'm seriously looking at a used one from a person who is in my mind an excellant rider/tuner and have no doubt that it has been well taken care of. My concern is that it seems to me that I heard or read someplace that there was/is some issues with the motor, the head or valves or something like that.
Anyone able to enlighten me about this particular bike?
 
The two issues I recall is the Mikuni carb which halls had a fix for. The other one was to replace the valves with a newer model, that has more than likely been done.
 
Some of the '04s had issues with soft valves that would wear prematurely. If they haven't had and issues by now it probably wasn't one of them. If it did have issues then they have likely already been addressed. I would ask if the valves have ever been replaced, if not then have the valves clearances remained pretty consistent. If the answer to either question is yes then you are probably OK.:cheers:
 
I would also check the starter gear. I know of a couple gears including mine that had teeth break off. Easy to replace if needed-needs to be done if they start breaking because it will grind off the starter gear teeth and you'll need a new starter too. You check it by pulling out the starter-two bolts-and pulling the starter. the gear will spin one way and you can visually inspect the teeth. I like my '04 very much:thumbsup:
I did replace my valves with SS after a year of riding. Depending on the sale price a 300 kit is a great addition!

Can you explain more how to replace this? I just bought a 2004 TE 250 with 30 miles on it so I think I want to take care of this.. Thanks for the help

Which JD jet kit do you use for the Mikuni carb. I have a buddy with an 04 TE250 which is jetted really poorly and a JD kit may just be the way to go. However when I looked on JD's site they only appear to go back to 05 for that bike which is when I believe they started using Klein carbs

My daughter raced an 04 TE for 3 years, what i found was starter was loose two bolts holding the starter were loose, which in turn cause vibration when the starter was used causing worn starter gear and losening the starter gear assembly which in turn ate all the gears after that happened new starter and all to fix it. As i said it was 3 years she raced it i never had any issues until the last 2 races one of her intake valves kept tightening up she only had 3 more races in the season so i figured i would make it last until end of year wrong! The intake valve snapped off causing catostrophic failure actually my laziness did it.
Point to the story is the bike was 5 years old before anything happened never an issue before that. If he hasn't done the stainless valves do them, if he hasn't changed out the starter gear do it. Big insurance for less cost then a motor job. She does how ever ride/race an 02 WR 125 now.
 
JD jetting does not make a kit for the Mikuni. Halls is the place to go.
I had my starter gear go after a year 1/2 or so. I waited too long after hearing noise so I needed a new starter too. Just keep fresh oil in it and ride it.
