  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE310R Decel popping - is this normal?

Boogie

Husqvarna
Pro Class
Took a few 310's out for a walk recently and my buddy asks me why my bike pops and crackles more than his... I'm not really sure, but I am guessing the main reason is because he has the DB killer still installed in the end of his silencer and I don't. :excuseme:

My bike = 2013 TE310R, powered up
His bike = 2012 TE310, powered up, stock ecu, 4 port injector, DB killer installed

My bike runs well with good throttle response, but does pop on decel especially when coasting downhill and using engine braking like in the video below.

I'm not overly concerned and it feels normal but have a listen and tell me what you think...

Do you know what kind of gas mileage you are getting?

A more open exhaust DOES allow more popping to be heard.

I would bet that your 2 bikes have different EFI maps.

The perfect idle mixture is for 1800 rpm (our bikes), but when you are decelling, the rpms are higher, thus the mixture that is good for 1800 rpm is too lean for higher rpms. One time I had to rejet a guys Harley, he hated decel popping so much, he had a shop up the idle jet so much, that upon extensive idling in a parade, he was carbon-fouling his spark plugs. Moral of the story: popping on decel is not a bad thing to me.

Could be something with the fuel mixture ratio running too lean... did you change fuel mappings?

On a side note, kind of derailing, but been wanting to know.. how's the difference with the ecu upgrade and 12 port injector.. Since you have two nearly identical bikes except ecu upgrade / 12 port injector - is there a noticeable difference?

Yeap sounds like my 84 510, popping is a lean mixture, mine still has a carb, NOT EFI like your, so yours will be harder to change then
just turning a mixture screw. But your right it sounds like it running well.

if the popping is bearable and the bike is not running too hot (also look at the spark plug) then it should be ok.Otherwise have a slight remap to richen it up a tad. Getting over 100kms on a tank is acceptable.

The 2013 TE310R runs a Keihin EFI system and the 2012 has Mikuni. Also, the '13 has a different head and husky claim 5% more power over the '12. So not really identical. Its the Mikuni system that benefits from the ecu / 12 port upgrade and I havent heard of anyone swapping out the injector on the Keihin system, IMHO there is no need.
Considering all this, there is a noticable difference between these two bikes. The '13 runs smoother with a little bit more power. If the '12 was my bike, I would definately upgrade the ecu and injector.

FYI, I'm not sure which map is loaded in my '13.

There are 3 different maps available for the my13 te310, sock, full power and leovince. The leovince map usually fixes that deaccel poping.

I had a 2011 TE310 and it poped like hell when riding hard and then backing off my mate could always hear me coming it had the power up and open exhaust I did 4500 KM on it in two years with no problems I now have the 310R love it only done 200KM on it but it pops as well so I dont think there is anything to worry about. I would like to know more about the Leovince map though I will ask my dealer here in Adelaide.

My 13 TXC 310 starting the popping on decel, then eventually would not idle. Next, the throttle response weakened, so it is in shop now. The dealer believes it needs a new injector, so hopefully when I get it back today, and get to ride it this weekend, this will work. Kind of strange since my bike has less than 10 hours of ride time.

A bit of popping w/open map but runs great and milage is way improved. Easy quick ride at Shasta recently. '13 TE 310R

Regardless of any pop crackle... I get quite a few comments about how good these bikes sound.

hi rob1965. i ave the same problem with the popping and sometimes no idling. did your dealer fix this problem?

greets achim

When I got mine, the Dealer said that if it popped on a closed throttle, to weaken the mixture a little.
On the 13/14's, just turn the choke knob - can't remember which way to weaken, and I've never had to do mine.
Don't screw it in too much, as it cuts off all the fuel. Full stop. No start!

Had a similar issue with a KTM, turned out to be a very simple fix.
Check your header to muffler pipe joint for leaks. Even a small exhaust leak will cause popping on decel.

In my case the muffler was mounted too far back and the slots in the pipe were it slips over the header were slightly open.
Moved it up, clamped everything down. Popping gone.

According to JDJetting

Deceleration Popping on 4-strokes
The most frequent cause of loud popping on deceleration is an air leak at the header pipe connection to the motor. Even a very slight air leak can cause the deceleration popping. This is usually harmless, but can be annoying. As the pipe develops carbon/soot, the popping usually reduces with ride time.

Use the following instructions for Carburetor or for FI use the equivalent adjustments on your tuner.

The jetting can be adjusted richer at idle to help reduce the popping in most cases. A lean idle mixture can cause popping on deceleration, but the deceleration popping is usually more mild. Try turning the fuel screw on the bottom of the carburetor outwards by 1/4 turn steps up to 1 turn. The next option would be to switch from the Red marked needle (if currently being used) to the Blue marked needle in the same clip position (or 1 step leaner) to make the low-end jetting richer and keep the mid-range unchanged. Be aware that richening the low speed jetting excessively will reduce mileage and make the motor more difficult starting when hot. If your motor doesn't need the choke at all when cold starting, then the idle may be on the edge of a rich condition when hot.
Note that all the Japanese motorcycles have a bolted header flange and gasket to prevent exhaust air leaks. Yamaha WR450s and WR250s have a air-cut coast enricher to reduce the same deceleration popping too.

It can be rich as well, and that causes soot as well the hot start issue, choke, etc.... The clip posted above was after I had map 3 flashed. The following, is above Ouray, Co and from 8:30 exhibits the 'popping' with map 3 at high elevations where hot starts could be an issue...

After PCV and making leaner 2-10% at lower revs.... from 11:40 in C'oeur D'Alene... No popping and no hot start issues.
