  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

te410e sight glass mystery

I have a 1999 te410e. I have never been able to figure out the sight glass. I am wondering if the cover for my bike is not stock or maybe there is some other problem.

Last summer I kept putting in oil but it never registered in the sight glass, it was either already full over the glass or no oil is getting behind the glass no matter how much oil is in there.

Just now I did an oil change, I replaced the paper filter and cleared out the bag filter on the left hand side.

I put in 2 liters of oil and again, I don't see the level in the glass or it is already filled up above the glass so I can't see anything.

Below is a photo of the crank case cover. The sight glass is just below the brake pedal arm. It is white, where my phone is reflected as I took the picture.

Maybe someone can confirm this is the correct location for the sight glass or offer some helpful information. The problem is that the bike leaks a tiny bit of oil, just a slight drip, that does not seem to want to go away. So I need a way to check the level, and now the sight glass is not an option. For now I am taking close notes of the level by looking into the crank case from the fill hole. So I can remember what 2 liters looks like. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am getting ready to take the bike from Corfu, Greece, into the mainland and tour the country for about a month. I took a similar trip last summer for 17 days and the bike worked perfectly. Thanks!!

Ok,

So I just did an experiment. I started the bike and warmed it up for three or four minutes. While it was running I checked the sight glass. I could see oil dripping down through the glass. I cut the motor off and held the bike vertical, while looking into the glass. The level never comes up to the marks. I think I can see the level, well below the marks, but I am not sure. I tilted the bike both ways to see if I could see the level move, or rise up to the level of the marks and could not see anything. I did this for about three minutes before I gave up.

Is the proper amount of oil for the bike 2 liters? Even with a filter change? Does it hurt it if I add more?

Again any help would be appreciated, I have never had a problem like this with any other bike I have owned.
