  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Te449 how often do you top up oil??

Husqvarna
A Class
I have noticed that after a 100+ mile rideout the oil level in the sight glass has dropped from half way up the glass to the bottom of the glass,is this normal consumption??,I know there's just over a litre in the engine anyway and I don't have any clouds of smoke out of the bike,so was just wondering.

The sight glass can be fickle. I change mine at around 100 miles. It is always right at the same amount I put in give or
take. I would check it by measuring how much in and how much out. That will tell the story.
I have the zipty breather and oil tank now so I just fill it to the filler threads and forget about it. I like this mod.

Before my breather mod, I'd notice just the opposite as the oil expanded due to temp. The oil would be just shy of the top of the glass before I left as I never subscribed to that whole fill it halfway to keep it from leaking into the airbox crap. For a good hour after getting home from an 80 mile day, the oil was over the glass on the sidestand, then went back to it's original level after cooling.

Mine does not consume any oil, and as Huskynoobee said, the level goes up quite a bit from cold to hot engine.

I have real problems with oil level after changes . Not as much of level, as first starts after changes.
If it starts right away before cranking for two seconds and stopping it burps in to air box.
That is using the site glass half way up. A little weird but some thing that happened more than once.
I do use a small amount but also change oil 100 mi. and filter every two or three times.

New breather vent/oil recovery tanks are pretty much required on these engines for oil drama freedom and long engine life. Lowering your oil level creates all kinds of other problems down the road.

After a bit of advice I cleaned the air filter (which didn't look too dirty and not a great amount of muck washed out) and hey presto,no oil was used on my next 100+ mile rideout....yet again I am a happy bunny:)

Hi all.
Unfortunately I found my Husky consumes some oil.
I change oil and oil filter every 500 km, but have to top up approx 50-70 ml after 300 -400 km. I thought it happened because of dirty air filter or not frequent-enough cleaning of it... but last time I installed brand new no-toil filter and after 5 rides ~100 km each without dust I measured oil level and finally now I'm confident that motor consumes some oil.

Do anyone topping up the oil like I do? Do I have something wrong with a motor/ have to fix something?

My odo says 2 000 km. Oil Motul 7100 10w40
Thank you in advance

Sounds not good. Pretty much new engine used for trail rides only...

Yurri- these engines have a small volume crankcase, and with the questionable crankcase ventilation position (it's low, near the bottom of the piston skirt and rotating "stuff", instead of up high on the valve cover) they tend to move a lot of oil up and out of the vent.

This might be your problem- the 449/511 is very finicky about it's oil level. Insure that your bike is actually burning the 50-70ml of oil per 400km. It may be just "burping" the top 100ml out because of a poor ventilation design (which, because of the low oil volume to begin with, is not a great thing either but it's a easily solvable problem- many threads regarding it).

If this is the cause of your problem, at the bare minimum install an additional vent on the valve cover (and restrict the stock vent?). Plenty of experts and threads on this forum- hit 'em up for answers.

Your english is excellent- let me know if there is too much idiomatic Americanism and I'll translate.

BTW, this is a big clue here:

good luck.

No mods. No drama. Change oil often. Never bother to look at the site glass. Fill at oil change with measured quantity and never look back.

My brand new 14 te449 does the same thing. Top off every 100 miles or so and I've never found oil in my air box/filter so I assume it burns oil

Shovelhead85, thank you! I've read a lot about proper oil level on these bikes. I fill up 1 liter when change oil (with oil filter, always). Never found burped oil in airbox...
Probably it could be not accurate oil measuring from my side, how I do: start cold engine, let it run on idle for 5 min, stop it and let the oil go down for 2 min, than check level with bike on a horizontal surface without any stands - the manual says to do like that.

But: I did it during spring, when outside temperature changes in a range 5 to 20 C (40 - 70 F). So there is some another opinion from my friend - 5 min is definitely not enough to reach proper temperature of oil for correct measuring. So due to differ outside temp I have measured level with different oil temperature. It is better to go for a short ride (of course after warming the engine) and check level after the ride. The level should be on a mid of site glass. - Any thoughts?

Regarding ZipTy Oil Kit - it is a great thing. I've also read a lot about that, definitely it is pretty much required for 449/511 engines. For sure will purchase one some day.

- thanks, I got you. Till now its clear. I understand some Americanism as spent 1.5 years in Orlando, Fl :)

I can say that mine used a little oil before it was fully broken in. 2000mi+ on the clock and all is well

Excuse me, what does it mean - fully broken in. If it means switched to race map 2 with akro installed - I did it. Unfortunately I cant switch to race map 3 by myself and we do not have Husky dealer in Ukraine no more since husky become KTM. sad smile

Your year and model cannot be upgraded to map 3 anyway. Powercommander or other fuel tuner is only thing you can do.

Excuse me, what does it mean - fully broken in...

Well, you've run up against a American idiomatic term; the British English (hmmm.) equivalent term is usually "run in". It means to run a new or rebuilt engine until the close tolerances are mated a little better through friction and heat cycling (typically it's the rings/cylinder that are the biggest concern, but the valve train certainly benefits, as does the gearbox).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Break-in_(mechanical_run-in)

On my son's 511, you could really feel the increased power by about 700 miles (1000+Km). My 310 loosened up nicely too (and about 15 extra hp after being uncorked). My engine was broken in before the suspension was broken in. weird.

I think the term comes from training wild horses to take the rein & saddle; but we also "break in" new boots, gloves etc, so I could be wrong.

Shovelhead85,

Thank you a lot for very informative explanation. Every day we are learning something new..

What do you think about the way of checking oil level described above? (to check after the short ride, not after min on idle)
