  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE449 valve clearance check. When and home or dealer?

I've got 750 odd kms on my 2011 449 now and being my first 4 stroke I am thinking about valve clearances. Bike is used predominantly for single track and fire trail riding. Previous owner (I purchased it with 500 kms on the clock) had just trail ridden and done 1 grass flat track event on it.

What sort of milage is everyone carrying out their first and subsequent clearance checks at? I do enjoy working on bikes almost as much as riding them and would not have a drama doing this myself but am a little put off by not having a shim kit on hand if required and having to order in shims as required due to their different style. Maybe best / easier / faster to have this done by a dealer??

Mate, you wont have to touch them unless your racing hardcore and on the limiter all the time.

Ive put over 5 thou Kms on her. Checked Valves at 500, 1000, 2k, 3k, 4k, 5k, and havnt needed touching yet!
Ive rung a few husky shops and asked around also, and they've said the same thing.

I am at 1066mi or 1715km on the same bike. I have been thinking of checking mine, but keep putting it off since it just seems to run awesome and it's smooth and quiet at idle.

I ride pretty much the same stuff you are so I only occasionally get the thing wrapped around and certianly never hit any limiter. I change the oil often (~300 mi) and run sythetic Mobil 1 10W-40 with a new filter every time.

Maybe at the next oil change I'll give it a go,
But feel like I should call around to the local dealers to see how far I gotta drive to get shims first...

Good to know it does not seem to be an issue at the early milage stage. Im with you on the oil changes so far. Oil filter when I got the bike, same 200 kms later ready for ride this weekend. Motul 7100 10w-60 recommended by importer over here.

I think it would be a good advantage to know if a local dealer had a decent shim selection in stock before getting stuck into valve clearances!

Mine hadnt budged a smidge yet since new (less than 1000 miles still). I was a bit bent that Husky (or BMW) chose those goofy half moon shims. Seriously is this some kind of conspiracy? Why not just use industry standard parts? No adjustments meen a multi day project as I tear down, measure, calculate, order, wait...wait...wait...then reinstall. Trying to stock up on the half moons will cost a fortune unless someone knows some non OEM source.

Is there perhaps some other shim source that I can order a ready to roll kit?
