  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

torque limiter

Look I am not new to working on street or dirt bikes as I have done so for over 45 years, but some things I see makes me question why have it anyway. So....

Why do we need a torque limiter on a TC449? It seems to be a waste?
I can see the need of some sort of cushion on high powered street bike, but a dirt bike?
It just seems to be a part that was used in street or duel sport applications that was just left in the dirt only applications that is not needed. I don't see any other brand mx bike on the market with one.

Is there any reason it could not just be eliminated by replacing it with a solid gear?

Has any one ever eliminated it? If so what was the results?

Clutch is on the crank and turns at a much higher speed than most. This gives it mechanical advantage and lasts a long time and is small and durable. This difference in design might be why it is needed. Many dual sport bikes have cushioned rear hubs to deal with this transmission jolting.

The GS450X didn't originally have the torque limiter. It was added in later after the initial testing was breaking transmissions.

Why try to do away with it if it isn't causing any trouble?
Off the 'who's had a limiter fail' poll, only a tiny few people replied they had failures.
And yes, Zipty/Speedbrain when they raced....
You might argue that 1st gear will fail one day too, but you'd leave it in until it does.
Just my thoughts.

Actually there has been many people who have had TL failures who did not wish to complete that poll. Originally when we went to BMW with this issue in 2010, they said we were crazy, that there was no TL issue. When I consulted with Husqvarna over the issue, they told me that a solid transfer gear was tested and 10-20 transmissions had failed, that they could not take the pressure from jarring.

I have redesigned a new TL to break under pressure but will not fail. But the current cost is prohibitively expensive. I would consider the build if CCM would hop on board, but when contacting them, they said that there was no TL issue with this engine and refused to comment further.

Well, they like to sell parts. :)

I think maybe you mis-understood me, I wasn't suggesting a solid replacement as I understand the stresses on the g/box.
I was just saying why bother pulling one out that is working that's all.

The original part isn't too expensive genuine, I guess getting one in a hurry is the real issue - the reason I purchased a low mile s/hand one when I had the chance. I would always back it up with a new part when time was on my side.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. We have been battling with the issue for awhile now and finally getting aknowledgement that there is an issue.

I'm wondering if there is a possiblity the limiters don't like the auto based oils.
It is essentially like a limited-slip diff clutch pack in operation.
In speaking with oil company tech-lines, all auto oils contain some friction modifiers of various levels.(Some very low levels, some lots)
Just thinking out loud here...

Ty always raced them using Motorex and Torco, went out every race he says.. I think it's poor design.

Fair enough.
Agreed on the design, it would have been better to have with 5 strong wide ratio gears without a limiter rather than the 6 speed. (I know the BMW has it as well)

I like the 5 speed better too. The TL wasn't on the original engine, it was an add-on after they went to 6 speeds.
