• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TR650 Clerk - who is interested?

  • Pays nothing
  • Long hours
  • Eventually people will be unhappy with your decisions
  • But.. you could organize the TR650 forum the way you want it.
Requirements:
  • Need to own a TR650
  • Be clear thinking and abstract
  • Can work independently with little or no input
  • Treat members politely, even when the tougher decisions need to be conveyed
  • Bonus would be if you are a member of, and are used to, other sites like advrider and can 'see' what works and what doesn't - sort of a knack which is difficult to describe
  • Double bonus would be knowing simple html, or the willingness to learn (it really is simple) - more precise information management is definitely overdue. It would be great to get some dedicated 'Pages' to the TR650's - and those would need to be in html.
You would have thread management duties. Things like: stick/unstick, split/merge threads, and a few other things.

This is not a moderator position, thread management only. Similar to what MattR is doing in 2st.

I *was* going to eventually do this next for 4st, but with the 650s in their infancy, and since I have a 650 (as do several moderators), and with all the recent talk about keeping things on topic... I think the TR650 forum would be the place to start.

Let me know if you want the job or want to nominate someone.

It is a 1 person job, but they can obviously work with as many people as they want.

(caveat: I reserve the right to override decisions, but do not anticipate doing so, I've got far too much to do).

Umm... actually there would be some pseudo moderator duties - making polite suggestions to people that need them.

Things like "great idea, that deserves it's own thread" (though obviously you could split the thread), or if someone gets upset try to calm them down, or if you think it is important notify the moderators via the Housekeeping button if necessary.

Well, its a real mess out there... Searching is hard.

Question is whether you allow additional subfolders. If so, first steps would be create several 'themed' folders, eg. mods (self-made), farkles, servicing etc. Then categorise current posts pool and move them to the appropriate subfolders.

This folder also needs 'contents' and 'external links' posts as sticky to direct readers. Thats for starters. Then obviously some chopping and merging. Lots of work IMHO.

Thats very nice of you Mr HF. Yeah, I've been modding several forums so far. I know its rather a responsibility and service than power or recognition.

Two things to consider, however, if I am to act as 'the clerk':
- time zone difference to most CH users; therefore some actions will be done later than by someone in the US;
- I'm not a native English-speaker; although being quite proficient, I might not be able to identify all 'shades' of English communication, esp. in American English.

But, TBH, I dont see those as major obstacles as CH appears to be one of the most friendly communities I've seen so far :applause:

+1 for Mario! I understand about you maybe not understanding the "shades" of English, but the rest of us can help if there is a huge misunderstanding. We all make mistakes Mario and it would be no big deal. The time zone issue I only see as a slight negative and a big positive. The negative being that bad post, question, or dispute might sit there a while before you can get to it. The positive is that it truly shows CafeHusky as a world wide community.

Frankly, I've wondered if Mario was Polish or an ex-pat American because his English is just about perfect. In fact, I have never read anything that he has posted to make me believe he was anything but a native English speaker. 'Wish I could speak any other language like that!

...Question is whether you allow additional subfolders....
I'd rather not because it is not as friendly to the new member, or even the established members. Generally speaking if someone started a thread in the slightly incorrect location, then it was moved somewhere else, people are generally unhappy about that and tend to not post as much.

I was thinking about encouraging people to keep the more important threads a bit on topic, and if another major topic grew out of a long thread, to just split the thread. Then organize things with more of a hands off approach, such as a 'Index' or 'Table of Contents'.

Here is a link to a long thread I did many years ago, by all outward appearances it looks like a series of cross linked web pages - when in reality it is nothing but some carefully crafted posts linking to each other:
http://www.thumpertalk.com/topic/467106-important-information/ (Though I am curious why that is still a sticky, it is waaayy out of date)

Something like that could be done, or even a standard Index type thread, or even a double index type thread. There is a link in this thread called Husqvarna TE/SM 610 Index thread. http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?s=1a2167a42efbcdb94f1be3df870bdcec&t=366046

When "TE/SM 610 Index thread" in the above link is clicked on, it goes to this thread:
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=156431&highlight=index

And those are just a couple of ideas using standard threads, nothing special at all.

In addition, we have the ability to have actual html pages that could easily be cross linked.
Here is an tml page: http://www.cafehusky.com/pages/cafehusky_merchandise/ and clicking on the Cafe Husky sticker takes people to this page:
http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/cafe-husky-vinyl-graphics-stickers.8303/#post-87200

This will sound incredibly bizarre, and will re-enforce the fact that some members think I am a 'weird person' in some aspects.

Cafe Husky Members, in addition to being contributors, are "customers", similar to retail Customers.

Here is an excerpt from a computer retail store training manual I just found on the web:
help customers solve problems. "Your job is to understand... your customers' needs - some of which they may not even realize they have

What I am suggesting, is to look at multiple facets of the 'how to organize information' problem. Just think how it would affect new members, established members, computer savvy members (or not), people that know Husqvarna Bikes (or not), people that know bikes (or not), members that have a lot of patience (or not)... things like that. There will be at least a few people that ask a question, and they do not know what their next question will be - but because we have had the 650s for a little while - most of us could anticipate.

For instance, these could be a series of questions from a new member:
  1. How do I get the bike on the stand so I can service the swing arm or stem bearing? The bike is heavy and Irregularly shaped on the bottom. - one answer might be a strong skidplate from Motosportz.
  2. Then they might want to know about radiator protection...
  3. Then they might want to know how to change the oil, possibly with short video or pictures
It might be good to have the above 3 items presented early (as opposed to later) in whatever documentation is created.

Make any sense?

Mario....the Husky ain't English either!

If we were concerned about the English, this would be a Triumph forum. I reckon.
