• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TX300 vs FX350?

95jersey

Husqvarna
AA Class
I currently have a 2014 Gas Gas 300. Before that I had a TE310 (Italian).

I am in market for new bike and are looking at either the TX300 or FX350. I am senior hare scramble racer and of course do weekend trail rides. I ride with fast guys and we pretty much run a race pace all the time and are aggressive.

I guess the debate is the old 2 vs 4 stroke, but I am having serious trouble making up my mind. I listed some pro/cons of each. The ones in bold are more important to me. Am I missing anything on my list?

TX300 Pro:

1) cheap maintenance
2) simple design
3) light/nimble
4) cheaper cost
5) better lugging off idle

TX300 Con:

1) Jetting based on altitude and temps needs adjusting
2) have to premix fuel which is a problem on 100 mile dual sports when stopping at gas stations
3) poor fuel mileage compared to 4 stroke injection
4) more tiring power delivery

FX350 Pro:

1) smooth less tiring power delivery
2) less vibration
3) better fuel mileage
4) no premix, can just fill up at gas station without carrying oil
5) no jetting issues ever

FX350 Con:

1) Heavier (just a little)
2) more complex and difficult to diagnose problems
3) more expensive
4) very costly maintenance and rebuild
5) 4 stroke flame out in the tight stuff

What do you guys think? It is not an easy decision.

May not be an easy one for you but imo tx300 all day for the exact reasons you listed. Mixing gas in any situation is fine by me but is a little bit of a pain. Rode a 15 Ktm 350 and personally I didn't really care for the engine. Nice and smooth but just missing the punch I love outta my two strokes. I do a bit of single track type stuff and I personally have not ridden a bike that does what my te does in the woods. Plus the 4t maintenance costs are not where I'd wanna spend my money. That being said I haven't ridden the tx or the fx of 17 but I have a real good idea of which I'd pick (call me 2 stroke biased but w/e, you posted in the 2t section lol) Good luck and either way I'm sure both are great bikes.

The fuel mileage, smooth torque and lack of premix entices me on the 4 stroke. The simplistic, cheap and light feeling of a 2 stroke equally entice me.

"May not be an easy one for you but imo tx300 all day for the exact reasons you listed." as stated above-

I don't do any super long distance stuff but we do up to 150 mile days. I have a copy of my oil ration chart (for me its all 50:1) taped/sealed behind the front number plate, with my oil amounts from 1/2 gal on up for easy reference.
I use a cylindrical shaped small mouth well sealed container (a used maxilube container) with oz marks for ref. in my backpack which I only use for the long rides
Also for our Ca. dez/Baja/longer stuff I just throw on the bigger tank to get the extra 15-20 miles on. And sometimes even carry a maxima 1/2 gal used oil container with ready fuel on my belt for added distance insurance. Just pour the carry at every break. Just all food for thought. Coming from the G-G 300, I think you will be spot on sticking with the 2T formula. For me the most important thing with the range is to always have some oil!!! Ive scammed fuel from more than one of my 4T friends when Im out 60 miles and those FI 4Ts are still on 1/2 a tank!!!

Or wait til summer and get the new G-G new generation 300 which will be basically a KTM XC chassis configuration with KYB suspension and a G-G new gen engine with integrated e starter
that's my 3cents. Fact is with all this new tech you cant go wrong with any of these bikes and in addition those dang Yamaha FXs are really really good. I hope they kick in a middie size model meaning a 300-350 cc YZ300FX (for example)

I've discovered that it's REALLY hard to manage with just one bike! (unless you're mostly doing only one kind of discipline). I've now got the Ktm equivalent to the TX with my '17 xc300 and that has upped my game considerably in the tight and technical stuff. You've got to balance your needs and choose accordingly.
