• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TXC 450 bog/hesitation from idle

Husqvarna
Hi there - I am a Husqvarna rider in New Zealand, having recently bought a new-old stock 2008 TXC 450.

I have 15hrs on the bike so far, and while having now set up everything to my liking and generally stoked with the performance, I am frustrated by a bog/hesitation on the snap from idle. From what I read, this may be an inherant problem and would appreciate any advice on a cure.

The jetting set-up is as delivered.

It appears to get worse when the bike is hot after clutching through steep/tight sections. Firstly I am not sure if it is a too lean or too rich problem - If it gets worse when it gets hot, does this mean it is too lean?

I have a Sunline alloy (extended) mixture screw to install to make adjusting the mixture easier but need to remove the carborator to install this initially, so was wondering if there were any other changes suggested while I had the carberator off eg. change in slow speed jet (should currently be a 45, but have a spare 42).

Anyhow, I am sure there are some very knowledgable heads out there that have dealt with this issue previous, so would appreciate your advice.

Thank you.

Cheers, Tony P.

Do a search here on the pump set-up. Coffee did some great work on setting up the pump and o-ring installation. I also suggest getting a Boyesen pump cover with the adjustable leak jet. Makes life a lot simpler and keeps the air from the pump, which sounds to me like is most of your problem.

Tony P.

I have come across the same problems with my 09 txc 450. It has been a long stuggle to get this ironed out. Here's what I've done.

1. I got ahold of a remote hot start button. This has helped when, like you say, the bike stalls in the tight twisty stuff when well into your ride. Instead of bending over and reaching around the tank ( IMS 3 gal) this has made life a lot easier. The bike starts right up.

2. I finally broke down and bought an R1D power bowl set-up that really cleaned things up A LOT.

http://www.r1dean.com/ it's expensive but has helped ease the pain of owning a new bike that wont run right.

Asking questions like you have, everybody has their ideas how things should work out.

Getting to the carb is a chore and has made the tuning experience a drag. Good luck and keep us posted on your outcome.

p.s. I have tried JD jetting in the past on my KTM and did not like it. Some people swear by the kits, others just aren't as happy.

I have an 08 TXC450, also from New Zealand
Was doing exactly the same thing as you desrcibe
Bought a JD Jetting kit for it, followed the simple instructions, completely different bike!
No hesitation at all from idle and pulls like a schoolboy!

The JD jetting kit with its recommended settings made a huge difference on my husband's 09 TXC 450 as well. I imagine you could get the same result from using other jetting needles, etc., but the JD jetting kid is good for lazy people like us that want everything in one box. Also, JD himself will talk to you if you need advice. The bike had the bog and would also decel pop like crazy. It seemed to get worse over time and even got to the point where it would shoot a little flame from the exhaust if you rapped the throttle.

Did the JD kit do anything for stalling? Did you have any problem stalling in tight twisty stuff after the bike was warmed up? This has been a problem with mine and sounds like it is giving Tony fits as well.

The JD kit helps the bottom end the most, I have one on my 510 and the stalling is gone unless I do something dumb like not shifting. The jd kit was well worth the money and it would be the first thing I did to that new bike of yours. I would also recomend getting the honda type diaphragm with the longer stop it also reduced the accelerator pump squirt, which improves fuel mileage and makes the bottom end even snappier. You can search TT for the honda part # or get one from JD jetting as well. Good luck !

I just finished a big bore build. I had Ron at Rb Design put a divider plate in my FCR and it works great for cleaning up the bottom end. If you want to jet on the cheap you can buy the o-ring like whats in the JD kit at the hardware store. I did alot of dyno tunning and the best needle I came across was the Honda HRC. That jet kit is $20.00 from Service Honda and comes with a new leak jet as well. Kehin has a needle that is real real close for about $12.00

Hi Guys,

Thank you all for taking the time to reply to my plee for help with the bog/hesitation with my TXC 450.

I took the advice of 'Enduro 450' and 'Phoenix' and spent some money and installed the JD Jetting kit.

Well, what a difference it has made in my situation. The hesitation has gone, it no longer stalls or flames out when snapping it from idle after a downhill or tight turn and starts every time on the second revolution of the starter motor when hot (without hot-start).

On installing the kit, the carborator already had the recommended 180 Main Jet and 45 Pilot Jet (swapped them anyway), so the obvious improvement is in the Neddle, Leak Jet and putting the 'O' Ring on the Accelerator pump.

Spent the last two days riding trails in the wet and mud with some tight tree stuff and it was awesum, lugging around in 2nd and 3rd and snapping the throttle without the past risk of a cough and stall. Nice grey pipe and never once used the hot-start.

All good - Money well spent - Thank you.

'Enduro 450' - where are you in NZ, I am in Laingholm, Auckland.

Cheers, Tony P.

o ring reference is installing an o ring onto the AP linkage allowing the AP to react faster but with some flexibility when the fuel pressure builds back pressure through the AP jet and the leak jet (some folks were safety wiring the linkage).
My 08 was/is JD eqipped, oring AP equipped, and also had the Powernows on both sides of the carb. My 08 started everytime hot or cold and I dont think I ever used the hot start knob, even during gnarley clutch slipper high heat rides.
