    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

TXC450 for motocross?

Has anyone used a TXC450 to race motocross and if so what are your thoughts? I used a TC250 last year and in the +30 & +40 I am up against pretty much all 450's so I am looking for something with a little more power. I am considering either a TC or TXC but I would also like to do the odd hare scramble and as I get older (yes I'm +40 now) could see myself doing more hs and less mx.

I've rode the TC through some tight trails and the 1st gear is so tall it wasn't a lot of fun. So what I'm thinking is while the TXC could be used for mx the TC may not work so well in the bush. Any comments people who have used a TC for harescrambles or a TXC for mx?
 
I have never ridden a TXC450, but a TE450 is way too heavy to be good at motocross. I know the TXC is lighter, but it is still heavier than a motocross bike.

Have you considered a WR250 or 300?
 
Running a mx once in a while should be ok on a TXC450. It is heavier than the pure mx bikes, but as I get older (and heavier) that seems to make less of a difference. I feel it is easier to run a off-road type bike on a mx track than it is to run a mx bike off-road. I have ridden a TXC450 (and own a TXC250) and power is NOT a problem. The 6 speed is very adaptive to a wide range on terrain, tracks and conditions.
 
Well I am 50 myself and play at MX on my 09 TXC510 and it's better than I am for sure. On the trails this is the first big bike I didn't feel the need for a Rekluse Pro on. The first gear is so low you can just let the clutch dump and the bike crawls ahead. On the MX track I don't even use 1st gear. And yes the button is nice. My son is 28 and he has ridden my TXC510 on the MX track and said it was the smoothest bike he has been on at the MX track. He said it did get a little unsorted at the limits but the sag is set up for my 200 lbs not his 170 so that could be some of it. I think it's totally doable.
 
I have a TC450 and used it in harescrambles with good results. Install a rekluse in it, make sure to have good jetting and it's as good as any other 450 off road IMO.

Now for MX, it's main flaw is the stock valving which is too soft.
 
Thanks for the input. I will wait until spring and see what is available (although there are some pretty good prices out there now). I am leaning towards the TXC cause I can get a blue plate for it and so after my racing days are done I can ride it on the road. It has the 6th gear so I won't be reving out a 2T with 5 gears. I also have a TC250 that my son will continue to use so there may be a bit of parts swapping and easier maintainence with two sort of similar bikes.
