  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Using a 77 L-Shaped Kick Start Lever on a 79 390CR

Okay, I know I'm being lazy, but I'm wondering if anyone has ever tried putting an earlier L-shaped kicker in place of the standard dog-leg pretzel shape, on a later 79 frame 390CR?
It appears the L-shaped lever will engage the motor at about 12:00, where the dog lever doesn't engage until about 2:00.
What I can't be sure of is whether or not the L-shape will clear the frame? It looks pretty close.
I'm afraid I'll loose the preload on the shaft and I'll have to take the cover off to fix it, if it doesn't clear the frame.
If someones already tried this, it would prevent me from an effort in futility.
Thanks for any help.

I too have been pondering this. I guess if it made a positive difference it would be a common mod. I have a spare 77 kicker too ....

Hi Grouty,
Thanks for your reply. Your probably right, if it would be an improvement, someone would have suggested it by now.
If I can find a spare gasket I may try it and let you know. I guarantee the gasket will tear, if I have to take the cover off.
My son and I are both over 6' and he has no problem kicking it, he can rapid kick it like a mule.
I have never been able to start it, even when it's warm.
