• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

I'm patient and scientific try to keep the emo in check. I still not at all happy with the E start system on my 2013 TXC310R.
Why do we have estart on our bikes?......for those times when we are in a tough spot or tired state and need a quick start to keep rolling
The only thing thats not OEM is my battery I have a ballistic 8 cell. I will put the lead acid battery back in just to see if it makes a difference. I do have all good connections, a new starter relay ("old" one had some resistance across the contacts) and a new starter. Thing still goes lame at worst possible moments. like on Sat during the HS I was in I was heat suffering, tired and stupidly stalled in a section of oak tree tight switchbacks,,she just did nothing with the button even when rocking the bike, of course kicking was going to work after like 10 kicks......I was pissed as guys were going by. Next lap I kept the machine at stupid high rpm and used the clutch as my throttle through that section to keep stalling in check. In all the photos that were taken in that section I happily look stylish there, lucky they didnt get me at the stall moment. RN

PS I still finished in class P2 and that stall did not prevent me from winning , the class winner had me from the start fair and square.

Did you have the update gear set put in,bikes with I think under 300 ending vin# all need it,our race team bike turned slow until we replaced the gear set. Also we have been experimenting having a local company heavy duty rewind them and it definitely makes them better $225 exchange with good core.

You came 2nd so what you moaning about****************************************:D

Are you putting it it neutral? Most of the time mine starts in gear but occassionaly will refuse and a quick tap in to neutral and off it goes?

nah it really just freezes up, Im good at getting it ready to hit the button. I just really think the combo of the starter motor being hot from the engine and the high compression ratio without enough intertia to get the comp release going , just stops the the thing cold (hot). OAT (outside air temps were up near 100 F as well)

Bill,
I asked about this update and my local guys have no knowledge of it. Can you PM or email me the details, I'll check my Vin I think it is low number Vin. Is it a service bulletin?

I just replaced the two gears on my bike last night. Seems to start better already. These parts were given to me by the dealer at time of purchase. They had not done the recall on it yet and I didnt' have time to wait so they gave me the instructinos and off i went. I did notice right away that there is no pause/hesitation when i hit the start button. The stock worked every time but there was a little pause at the very beginning, like it wasn't getting enough juice. That seems to have gone. I will be taking it out tomorrow and getting it nice and hot in hopes that it still starts great.

Good luck,

That would be this week, while you guys have my boingers (yes they are going to be up at ZipTy asap.
I sent Ty a email but its all good I just wanted some reassurance about where we are going with my forks especially.
Yes the valve thing was mentioned by local fast kid Noahs dad Gary K, he has been adjusting his comp release valve on the tight side of the spec.
If this thing a manual comp release this whole issues would be a moot point. I used to do that with my TXC450 crack the valve, crank or bump start and as soon as she turns over let go of the comp release and she would fire off immediately it was also second nature on my 610s and 510 when stalling then rolling into a bump start.

That sounds a lot like what ours did before Bill applied the gears update.

I wonder if when hot the resistance goes up high enough where the starter won't fire. Ty and I did discuss having gears specially made using our design.

Sounds like my 100 degree day 2 weeks ago stuck on a ridegtop. Oh well... I will just call Husky Trailside Towing, Rescue and Service on my new 2 way In Reach, for some compassion if nothing else :-/ Eventually if the issue continues.... Lemon Law. Time to get this nailed.

I know on the 2010 TC250 there was a cam mode for the compression release that bad these turn over much EZer. Bills told me about this and had done it on a few other thier bikes. Wonder if that might apply here as well. These X-light starters seem to be problematic.

It seems I have to kick start my TE310R first thing before every ride now. After its kick started the button works fine, but before it does nothing.. no click, no nothing. Lucky my bike starts with 1-2 kicks.

Its only got 800kms on it and a new Yuasa battery so... I wonder wtf???

And yep, I rock the bike or put it in neutral etc etc etc.

This can not change because its in the inherent design, but the very layout of the e start motor and its worm gear drive design uses alot of energy to turn the engine. The starter motor HP required to get the engine to turn over is higher with this design, rather than the more common (in line gears) set ups on other bikes.
The worm gear design is inefficient compared to the inline gears set up. Thats what we have to live with.

Are you sure thats right. Worm gears and high pitched whine when starting and the tiny starter motor have me thinking the starter motor on these are high RPM low torque type setup. Designed to save weight and room. Regardless all these worm drive starters seem to be problematic. The KTM version just flat sucks.

I can't believe this problem hasn't been resolved yet. One of the reasons I got rid of my 10' TXC250.

just found my bike is on service list, may be a step up to get it better.

As for not getting it right. My 2012 TE310 has never once had an issue with the starter very hot or very cold, so as far as I'm concerned the system is fine. maybe the combo of new head design and all the other stuff has it a little off.

hopefully the new gears fix from Husky will sort you out...good luck
My brother's 11te310 hasn't had the starter issue- its been very hot and very cold and ridden by a demanding rider (some hair scrambles, some enduros, bit of dual sport). All original electrical, valve lash, and internals. (fingers crossed, knock on wood)

Which gear is it wearing when they need to be replaced? To my knowledge, none of our 310's have experienced this problem.
