    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Vintage Steering head Bearing Race Removal

Anyone out there have experience ( a really good way to remove) removing the steering head bearing races?

I'm looking for something better than the old hammer and punch. Maybe that is the only way? Their is not much of a lip to get the punch against...

Also how about for install....? I'm thinking about machining a softer brass drift with a slightly smaller O.D. and then using a rubber mallet.

Anyone got any other suggestions for removal or install?

They are a PITA. I had my daughter hold a screw driver across the opening and catching the race lip (which is way small and i could not get my punch to catch) and then hit that with a drift punch from the far side of the steer tube. So basically the screw driver she was holding was 90 degrees to the race lip and I hit it perpendicular to that. To reinstall use a bearing press tool (expensive) or a round of aluminum just slightly under sized and tap it in carefully.

This tool is the best way. Pull it through from the far side until it snaps into place. hammer away.

the Park tool looks like the way to go for removal.... it is an absolute PITA.!. I used a few special French words last night...... I'm going to machine a soft brass or aluminum drift for reinstall and tap it in slowly.
