• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

What Gearbox Oil For '75 175cc GP?

What gearbox oil is correct for the '75 - '76 Cross Country bikes? Thanks in advance. Binx

motomwo and wrx - someone just sent me an old spec sheet for the 1975 175cc Cross Country bike and it recommended SAE 20 for the gearbox. The Torco and the Spectro are 75 and 80 weight respectively. Big difference between 20 and 75/80? Is there a reason not to stick to the recommended 20 weight? You can tell I have no past experience with this bike or any vintage Husky for that matter. So I appreciate any insight you can provide. Binx

Attached Oil Viscosity Chart shows that 20W crankcase oil (green column) is the same weight (viscosity) as 75/80W gear oil (orange column).

Vinskord - the chart clears up the viscosity questions for me. Thanks for sending it.

I finally figured out how to search the archives on this site and discovered a bunch (no surprise) of oil threads. Got the impression that lots of knowledgeable owners of vintage left kickers were using ATF Type F in their gearboxes. That stuff is cheap and available. Any reason to not jump on the ATF bandwagon?

<<you will get 11 opinions!>>

Yeah, I knew I was opening a can of worms. Appreciate the link to the older thread and the caution regarding ATF. Will play it safe and go with Spectro, Torco, or similar. Thanks again, everyone.

DON'T USE ATF! I have tore down many, many Husky transmissions and just about every one of them that had atf in them had pitting on the drive faces on some of the gear teeth especially on the big bore motors such as the 390, 430 500's.
Most people go to the ATF to help prevent clutches from dragging. The synthetic gear oils made for wet clutches will help prevent this and protect the gears and bearings.
