  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

What's the size of the hex bolt on front axle? 09 txc450

Husqvarna
AA Class
Would someone be kind enough to tell me what size the hex hole in the front axle nut is on my 09 txc450? If I make one more trip to grainger or sears and come home with the wrong size, my head might explode.

I've got enough allen wrenches in my tool boxes to build a steel frame house... but none that fit this stupid nut.

I suppose it's an 11mm, but can't be certain. a 12 is too big, a 10 is too small, but two sixes fit in there just fine...:excuseme:

I've welded a nut that fit onto a bolt that had a 10mm hex head (old yz sprocket bolt/nut.... no workie, it twisted off. the two allens didn't work.... I'm at the end of my rope. It's out there soaking in aero-kroil right now. hammer and punch is tomorrow if I can't figure it out.

EDIT: I just looked at my brand new proto "12mm" hex head socket that I picked up from Grainger today agin... it doesn't fit b/c it's a "1/2" not a "12". IDIOTS!!! Actually, it's just as much my fault, I should've looked at it before I left, but I've never had a problem with them before. Tomorrow will make my 3rd trip to Grainger. Good times....

Thanks man. I'm pretty sure it's actually a 12. My last trip to grainger yeilded me a package marked 12mm and a tool stamped 1/2". My fault for not inspecting before I left.

I couldn't find a wrench in my tool box that fit either. I didn't want to go shopping so I ended up finding two nuts that fit the hex and a bolt to thread them onto. I jammed the two nuts against each other on the bolt, inserted it into the axle, and used the bolt head to turn it. I need to get one of the conventional axle nuts. I don't want to carry this bolt or a 12mm allen wrench.

It is a 12mm.

I picked up one of the nuts Kelly makes. No more worries.

Later,

Thanks for the tip Tempus. All of my efforts have failed. I SHOULD be able to get the right tool tomorrow, assuming they have it in stock.

I'd like to have one of the bolts like displayed above, but $15 for hex socket to get this stubborn thing off, another $30 + shipping for a NUT ain't gonna happen. It's nice and all... but $50 is too much to rectify a stupid design decision by Husky.

Thanks for the validation of the size. At least I know if I can ever get my hands on a 12mm hex key/socket, I have a shot at getting this thing loose.

Cut an inch off a 12mm hex key and turn it with a 12mm wrench or get a new bolt from Kelly

Lairpost (?) used two 6 mm hex wrenches in Baja to get it out to change a tire. Well, it worked.

15mm nut from Kelly (aluminum) or George (stainless steel) and then the axle wrench advertised here and there for front and rear axle nuts.

yeah, I tried two 6mm allen's a few times. I couldn't ever get it to break loose. They would slip and twist or "pop" (round off?). I've soaked the bolt in penetrating oil for 2 days now. I hate to be barbaric... but I'm running out of time to get the suspension work done I'm wanting to do b/f the next ride... hammer and punch come out tonight************************************************************************************************************************

It's funny how something so insignificant and small can make you hate an entire machine.

I returned to Grainger again this morning (3rd trip there this week) to swap the 1/2" they had given me in 12mm packaging for a true 12mm.... "We gots wun in Memphis; can have it here tomorrow.":banghead: Gee thanks...

The axle nut will keep you from having this frustration on the trail and needing to make sure you have a special tool to get it out.

Sears has 12 mm hexes. I just bought one for $7.95.

the Allen head style axle nut is a lot more resillient to being damaged when banged up against rocks and it is lighter by design (at whatever fraction of an oz). So there is an advantage to the Allen style axle nut, disadvantage is it's not a common size tool for most to have around.

Using the axle nut that everyone is recommending is predicated on me getting the one that's in there OUT.

I ordered a 12mm allen from grainger today as well (about $3). it won't be here for a few more days, but should make a good pack tool for the trail. Whether it's a wrench for the Motosportz nut or an allen for the stocker... it's still a tool that only has one use on the bike (as far as I know). I can't think of any other bolts on the bike that I would need to tighten/loosen on the trail that are the same size as the aftermarket axle nuts.

I commend you for your innovation, dedication, and service Kelly... but I can't drop $30+ on a nut. MAYBE if I hadn't have had to buy a tool to get the stocker off, I could convince myself.

How so? you could take the nut one we make off with pliers if you had to. Been using them for years and never damaged one (I ride a LOT and in rocks) As for weight ours is aluminum and VERY light at 3/4 of one ounce. The tool you carry to take it out weighs 10X that.

No hardware store nearby? all you need are two nuts and bolt, bro.

I have been trying to get my stupid axle nut off for a week now... tried almost every combination of tools i own and it wont work lol. tried a 10mm hex with valve gaping tools on all sides, tried every kind of plyer, vice grips, pens pencils screwdrivers... no luck.
so i just ordered the damn tool.
im just glad other people have endured as much frustration as i have. stupid husqvarna, using off size tools. lets just hope that bmw doesnt make matters worse. next thing we know we will have to buy a $100 titaniumplatinumgoldalloy special bmw tool to get our front axle nuts off. when that day comes, im gunna piss on my axle nut and send it to bmw hq. lol

Chill out and go to your local Harbor Freight, they have an allen socket set that comes with a 12, 14 and 17(great if you have an old VW:lol:) and it's $12.

I think Harbor freight is largely junk, but this kind of stuff is hard to screw up.

Heres a link to it, it should be available in your local store, was at mine.

I am about 20 miles east of you, I could help out. 12mm allen is all you need.

Most people then put aftermarket front axle nuts on, which uses the Husqvarna wrench - 27mm rear, 15mm front.
