• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Which engine to rebuild

Matt Cummings

Husqvarna
B Class
I have two '72 250cc engines WR and a CR and only enough money to rebuild one.

Which one to rebuild and what to do with the other engine?

If it makes any difference on the CR it looks like the front engine mounts came undone and the rear mounts look a bit messed up.

The transmission ratio's are probably not the same, but should be used as a set.
You will also need to verify whether there are any porting differences between the CR and WR cylinders and then decided which one suits your riding conditions best.
Not sure if they both use the same ignition? That could make a difference also.
You can use the best parts between the two motors, but be sure you understand how they change the character of the bike.

I'd agree with Ron, 100%, if your not MX racing it , go with the WR, unless the WR is toast... I'm not a early Husky guy, but i know the later 70's cranks where different between the CR & WR, because of ignition.. So i'd be careful thinking everything is interchangable :banghead:
or you could be in for a big hit on your wallet.

Matt, I have a 72 250 WR and can confirm that the WR runs a FEMSA ignition that uses a different crank end for the flywheel side than the CR. If your crank is bad you will need to find the right crank, or consider switching ignition systems. Gear ratios are also different but everything else should be the same except for the badge.

Do you have the Service Factory Manual and Owners Manual for the bike?

Thanks for the quick replies guys. I'll try to get you as much info as I can. Got both engines on my table and started to look at them.

The porting on both engines are completely different.
Both have different ignitions.
The CR has a motoplat mini6. The WR has a FENSA.
I have no idea which are better.

I should note I plan on running AHRMA MX.

The CR has no compression not good :-/

I have a Haynes repair manual and a microfiche but that's in Dutch.

I'm open to all advice.

Here's some pictures

Matt, the Parts Guide for the 1972 MJ series lists the same cylinder for the 250 WR and CR, and the photo that you show above for the WR looks correct. I would suspect that the CR cylinder might be later, or a special option. What are the pistons marked in both engines and how do the cylinders look and measure?

So I broke open the engines

the WR is a 69.43 when I looked it up that's factory bore. The bore itself is clean shiny and almost can see the hatch, BUT the piston twists left to right almost 2 minutes if you where imagining it was your watch. That's about three times the CR that hardly moves.

The CR itself the piston is marked 69.68 first bore, BUT the piston was busted around the rim. Id assume the piston rings went with it ruining the bore.

Not looking good guys! The CR is out for the count and the wiggly WR piston scares me.

Help!
