• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

WR300 or TXC310 - tough call.

It's time for me to sell my sweet 06 TE450 and move to something a bit lighter & smaller. For the tight woods riding I do I feel the 450 is a bit too much bike anymore. I'm looking closely at the WR300 and the TXC310. I haven't ridden either so it's hard for me to compare the two. I like the light weight, torque and price of the WR but fear it also may be too much motor for tight woods. I like the e-start, light weight and "4-strokeness" of the 310 but fear there may not be enough low end grunt I'm I've grown accustomed to on the 450. I also ride a KTM200EXC and wonder how the 310's performance compares to it.

Does anyone have experience with both the WR300 and TXC310 that can help me compare the two? Thank you.

I recommend that you ride a 449/511. Amazing motor and unbelievalbly nimble in the woods. I just had a GG and KTM 300 riders say that my 449 felt just as light on the trail as their 300's. Both raved about the motor and handleing. The GG rider is going to buy one and the KTM guy said he would have bought one if he had ridden the 449 before buying his 300.

If you are looking to buy new, the 2013 250/310s have new wp radiators, upper cylinder and heads with 10% larger intake valves. This is supposed to give an increase in hp thorough the entire curve. I like the TE310R dual sport. As far as weight goes, they are a little lighter than the 449/511, but not by much. I agree with HF in that you should ride a 449/511 first before buying. They are very nimble in tight paths, but have much more torque, especially the 511.

I would 100 % go 310 ! I went from TE450 to TE310 and would never go back !

For tight woods riding IMHO forget about 449/511.

To be honest these threads are always going to get the same results !

Everybody will recomend what they own, even if its not perfect, no one wants to admit their choice of bike is not the best .

Taylor - To answer your question about the KTM200exc vs the TXC310 its going to depend on your riding style. The KTM is a great bike for sure, but it was meant to be ridden aggressively. The 310’s are great too, in fact I have seen them raced with the 450’s competitively. Definitely going to have higher torque lower on the curve with the 310, but the exc really rips in the higher rpm's. The KTM has a great motor in it and is powerful for it's size, the 310 will be quieter, have less wheel spin, less clutch work and will be more comfortable to ride. The 449 and 511’s are great bikes too, but they are bigger and not as nimble as the 310.

Haha DG, made me chuckle. I agree that everyone will recommend what they own, it is what we are accustomed to. I’m 6’6” pushing 285 w/gear, so I am right at home on the 511 which looks hilariously like I am sitting on a 125. Whether it’s the tight technical’s to open desert, I have no problem riding a larger bike, but it is definitely not for everyone.

ive spent time racing, riding the 450, 449, 310, and the 300. i really enjoyed my 450 huskies they were fast, fun, and bullet proof. i recently switched to a wr300 and its growing on me, feels very light and lots of torque, the front end is much more twitchy than my 450's, also the 300 seems to have a higher center of gravity or at least it feels that way. in comparision to the 310 to 300, i liked the 300's motor way more than the 310, the lowend grunt the 300 has is amazing, the 310 felt like it had to rev the crap out of it to make it move. with that being said out of the box the 310 was much more rider friendly, and much easier to dial in for me. i got to spend time on a tc449 on some tight single track and it supprised me, the bike looked massive but in all truth it was very nimble and the motor was much more tame than the 450's of previous years, which made it very good for the tight stuff . my biggest complaints with it was no kicker, and doesnt hold enought gas to make it throught a race on one tank. it also depends on where and what type of riding/racing you do, for me, and where i race its all 35-50 inch wide single track, and very hilly, and the 300 works very well, if i was riding and racing in more open terrain i would probably go back to a 4 stroke because the 300 runs out of gear on large straight.

I've only ridden the CR250s and 250 TXC\TC machines... These new 4T machines will probably turn better than that 300 in tight places but all in all, your choice will probably just come down to: "Do you want a 2T or a 4T machine? ...

You can win the championship on either ... Wanna pin that 300? Have your helmet strapped on tight for sure ... (I just purchased a 08 WR250 and a CR ignition to go with it just to show everyone here what a real 250 2T engine is all about ...And someone might do a little MX racing on it :) )

As far as the low-end grunt on the 310, not sure where you ride or how you ride, but if you are a rider, that problem will not exist ... It's not gonna be a 450 but you don't want a 450 ... And please, comparing a 200cc machine to a big bore 2T, 300cc machine? Just save those words :0 )

Gotta agreed with the 4T machines are easier to ride remark ... They are lite-weight\ almost chopped street bikes with high performance engines and suspensions ... They'll purr like a little hondo 50 or blast down the trails and tracks towards the front of pack ... That 300 might purr some, but it is all lion ...It's gonna roar ... You might wanna learn the term short-shift ...

Again. Boils down to riding style etc.... For myself, I have had a very hard time adapting to a 4 stroke and for some reason can just ride a 2-stroke faster whether it is a 125/150/200/250 or 300. If you can ride a few to compare, but remember those bikes are dialed in for someone else not you! Direct injection 2-stroke in the ner future! Yea baby!!!

I am the dude in the vid you like above. I ahve also ridden many WR250's and owned several. Also owned several X-lights and ride with a buddy that has a 310 all the time. I own a TE511 and have ridding PILES of all the huskys. Hereis my take...

WR250/300 - Very good flexible motor, EZ to use and forgiving / will not stall. Frame and suspension need upgraded badly and do not handle near as well as the newer generation bikes IMHO. Great deals can be found on these bikes.

X-light 250/310 - Great bikes. Feel as light or lighter than the WR's, has a lot of instantaneous power (uncorked with JD EFI tuner), one of the best handling bikes ever, Is a little complicated with all the hoses and wiring for the EFI making it cumbersome to get the tank off etc. Has some pop and stall issues. Very tight transmission good for tight trails but limited top speed unless regeared making it not so good int he tight stuff. Is more race leaning than trail but can be a good trail bike too. Motor have proven very solid.

449/511 - Feels heavier than the 250/310 but has a lot more power and good usable power. GREAT motor. Slightly different handling that works wonderful once understood. Not as good a super tight single track handling bike as the 250/310 but really not to far off and much better when things open up and it is very stable and fast (Uncorked and JD EFI tuner). Stone reliable and solid built bike. Odd features are off-putting to some who have trouble looking past a standard layout motorcycle. Many nice features and tech on this bike you like more and more as you own it.

This is great info, I appreciate all of your input - thanks.

I'm essentially a weekend warrior anymore riding mostly tight woods, an occasional organized dualsport and looking to get into hare scrambles. I'm not the fastest guy out there by any means but am competent. Having ridden mostly 4-strokes the last 30 some years I suspect I'd be very much at home on the TXC310, adjust quickly to it and it would meet my needs nicely. But I have to admit, and this may either sound wacky or you'll understand, I have an attraction to the WR300 for it's simplicity (and many other reasons). I'm not anti-technology or anything but in this technology laden day & age where machines are beginning to more closely resemble computers there's an old school appeal of the simple 2-stroke. The low cost of operating and maintaining a 2-stroke makes a lot of sense. On the other hand not having to kick the 310 or mess with jetting makes sense to! Like the advice above, I simply need to get a ride on both to make up my split mind.

Again, thanks for all the input - it helps.
