A No Toil discussion! Yeah!

Did a bunch of prep work on the WR yesterday and today. Swapped out the spark plug, the old one looks pretty good.

Oiled the air filters yesterday, left them overnight. Installed one today. Ermagerd! Is there anything better then a brand new air filter all oiled up and ready to go?

Went over all the nuts and bolts. Found a bunch that were very loose! Scary. What is wrong with some people?! Found two stripped out nuts, one is the top/forward chain slider (by the swingarm pivot), the other is the lower left side subframe mount bolt. I'll have to see what I can do about that, its a bummer but I'm not going to get worked up about it just yet.

Installed the Ricochet skid plate to take a closer look at it. I think I'm going to keep it, maybe modify it by adding some additional alu plating towards the back.

Installed the Cycra's (that I had bought for my kids DRZ125 but never installed - to bad kid! Heh heh)

Also adjusted the bars and levers. Tomorrow I'll change the gear oil (and on the '06 KTM 125 SX that I'm now selling) and realign the front tube, looks like its moved around on the rim, the valve is sticking out crooked. Then I just need to adjust the tire pressure and check the chain tension and I should be good to go for a shakedown ride.

    CAN'T WAIT!

Unfortunately my wife is leaving for a business trip for a week tomorrow and my two daughters have our weekend booked with volleyball and horse crap! Arghhh, may not get to ride the damn thing this weekend!

Anyway, that's the latest on the '06 setup. -Ed

Spurs! Investigated my boxes of spares too, looks like some nice dual sport type stuff there besides the plastics. The stock expansion chamber will come in handy. I'll be able to run one pipe while I'm taking the dents out of the other one. Also got a spare gas tank and cap, but no petcock (not pictured).

Wow. I've been using No Toil on the Twin Air filters in my KTM for years without any issues of splitting seams. Always the blue cleaner bottle too. Not sure why their oil would melt the rubber on the Moose filters, but who knows. I'll keep an eye on my Twin Airs. Thanks for the heads up.

I think I stated that wrong, it is the cleaner not the oil that does it. If yours did not do it first time your good to go. Mine literally fell apart like in the pic the very first time I used it. Bought the notoil filters and never looked back. Like the product a lot just need to keep an eye on non notoil filters.

Years ago I used No Toil filter oil & cleaner. Not only did multiple brand filters fall apart at the seams multiple filters ripped & fell apart where the filter presses against the air box if the bike was left with a freshly oils filter for a few weeks and not used. There must be something in the filter oil that attacks the filter as well.

Use Motul filter oil now and clean with mineral turps and then warm soapy water. No more filter issues.

Nope. Not looking good for this weekend either. Finished prepping it today. The only thing I haven't done that I wanted to do before the first ride is check the suspension settings. That will take me 5 mins. 5 gallons of fresh premix in the can. Even set the tire pressure. Its ready to load in the truck and go.

    I'm dieing here...

Finally got out on the WR today. Wow! I am loving this bike. Very interesting to ride it compared to my basically stock '06 KTM 125 SX. The Husky definitely works better on the tight trails and is way more plush, at least initially in the suspension travel. My WR has the dreaded mid bog, so that was driving me crazy all day, and the springs are way too soft for my 205 lbs, but it works amazingly well in the woods in spite of all that.

The gearing seems to be just a bit too tall for my trails. Has the stock 13/50. I think I will go with 13/52. I spent most of today in 1st-2nd where I would have liked to have been in 2nd -3rd.

But I would take it and ride it anywhere just the way it is.

My KTM jetting was spot on and I really missed that today. I could predictably steer with the back wheel, whack the throttle and loft the front end, or just lighten the front end while railing over trail crap. Couldn't do that with the WR unless I was in the top, then it screamed. Had to cover the clutch lever all day today. With the KTM I only had to cover it in tricky low speed situations.

So, "Operation WR125" is now in full effect! I need to sort my jetting, or buy a Lectron. Need to get my suspension sorted pronto. Need a new rear 52 sprocket.

Finally have it out in its element. This is a buddies property, 60 acres of single track goodness. About 3/4 of it is basically flat with mild elevation changes, plenty of ups and downs, the other 1/4 is some gnarly hill side. I only did the easy stuff on the hill side because of the bog.

    Typical section of trail.

New bark busters got christened. A number of times.

After weeks of rain, the sun has been out all weekend. Perfect conditions! The wet trails and wet leaves kept it interesting, but primo traction was there right under the surface leaves and mud.

Caught a g-damn sticker bush branch across the nose. OUCH!

This is one of the few sections where it opens up and you can really rail it. Check out that awesome berm in the background. The bike runs like a scalded cat on top, so that was fun.

This is looking up the trail on that same section, you can rail it for probably 1/4 mile or so. So much fun.

I saved two fuzzy caterpillars today that were in the parking area. My younger daughter will be proud of me.

Thanks man. And yeah, I should probably install the lightly used blue/yellow plastics for trail riding and save the brand new red/white in case I ever decide to sell it.

I like 12-50 combo for tight single track, for several reasons. the 50 has a little more ground clearance, the chain is shorter giving the bike
a little better response accelerating and the trans. ratios feel a little better. I also run the rear wheel very far forward in the swing arm to
quicken the handling and make the front easier to loft. I ride very tight single track with logs and ledges.

Hmm, that sounds good. Perhaps I should consider the 12 then. I've always been reluctant to run anything less then a 13 on my bikes as it seems like it might stress the chain rolling around such a small sprocket. Perhaps I'm being overly cautious.

Do you need to actually shorten the chain, take out any links when you go to the 12? Thanks.

The 12 is a good option. Play with your needle and see if you can get the bog to go away. If not a JD kit seems to fix a lot of issues with the stock carb. The Lectron rules IMHO but not necessary if you want to mess with the stock carb as you can get it to work it is just finicky to do so. The Lectron provide far better fuel milage in my experience as well. Glad you got out on it and are liking it. I bet it fits you better ergonomically as well huh?

Thanks for the tips Kelly. I wanted to drop my needle one position yesterday, but I couldn't get the carb top bolts loose and didn't want to strip them out by being impatient yesterday. I still need to investigate what my jetting actually is, I was hoping I might get lucky and the previous owners had it set up better.

The bike actually ran pretty good. Starts right up, usually first kick, even when stone cold. Idles nicely, screams on top. Off idle to mid is lacking though.

That is great to know about the JD jetting kit. Thanks! -Ed
