The ABS will function normally. I have installed 17 RT wheels on a 1200GS and all worked fine. The diameter and location of the sensor ring not changing, just the wheel diameter. Just turning slower, the bigger the wheel and vice versa. Wheels for the F650GS, renamed the G650GS work from 1999 to 2012 and imagine 2013. X challenge stuff is suspect and not sure it will work, I have some here I am going to try just to see if they will for posterity.
I am surprised that the debate hasnt mentioned price...In the UK ABS is a £700 additional cost..considering the use the bike will get with me that made the decision even easier to make..so I went with the 18s...and havent regretted it a bit.................
The cost over here for ABS is only $500, but you forfeit the 21"/18" spoked wheels for the 19"/17" cast wheels. To go with the big wheels is going to cost a good bit more, but perhaps will be offset by selling the takeoff parts.
Maybe I should have started a different thread for this, but I think the decisions are the same, albeit the choices are different. I've pulled the trigger on the Strada, and the conversion parts are ordered. Here is to hoping they get here this week.
Easy peasy, except that it needs a rider. I ended up deploying a week after that post, and I've been 7000 miles away from my Strada ever since.
Just my two cents, but if you want to ride off-road aggressively doing lots of technical single track, go with the appropriate tire and rim. If you want light to medium off-road and nice twisty on road then get the Strada with ABS. It eats up the twisties and performs quite well on the dirt, gravel and mud. A nod to another poster, if you go off-road at all, remember to turn off your ABS.
I have Terra ABS version, with 17 inch rear wheel. I am very pleased with it, but rarely have need to use the ABS. In Europe ABS helps resale value, and resale demand. Big issue for me is the limited choice of 17 inch heavy duty inner tubes. Would appreciate if anyone knows of a 140-80-17 heavy duty or ultra heavy duty inner tube (3mm or 4mm)? thanks
That is definitely worthy of its own topic/thread so that question gets the proper attention it deserves. Either here in TR650 or in Common Topics.
HD tube for 140/80/17 is too easy. I've been ordering this Michelin for other bikes for years. This is a new one in box that I plan on using for my Bonneville hack. I just bought this one a few weeks ago from Bike Bandit for $24. http://www.bikebandit.com/michelin-off-road-dual-sport-motorcycle-inner-tube?b=2758533
I buy my Terra 650 with 18", without ABS, mainly destinated to EEUU markets; so I can change enduro or cross dirt tyres. i am glad with metzeler stock. even posibly i will change TKC80.
