Hi Guy's, I can't believe I have only just discovered this site, thought I was the only nut left in the world who loves and rides Auto Husky's. Just put my last set of first gear clutch springs in my 420 and would love to know if anyone out there can point me in the right direction to buy some more.
My 420 I have had from new, bought it in 1983 and ended up buying another one which was just a few months old and hardly used (the owner didn't like it). Used the bikes regularly in the 80's and early nineties and only stopped when one was stolen from my garage. So that I wouldn't lose the other one I pulled it apart and put it in storage. A stroke of pure luck about a year later got my original bike back in a box of parts as the thief was apprehended. By then I had moved on to a new Husky (1995 360WR) and the old bikes were put away.
Got back into Twinshock racing on an 83 WR430 but still hankered after the Auto so a rebuild was started last year and it is now to the point of being my main race bike for 2013.
I really need a supply of the first gear clutch springs just so that I can be sure of doing a full seasons racing, any help in finding some would be fantastic for this years race plans.
I also have an 84 500 ready to go (still prefer the 420) and an 86 430 Auto (bought as an ex Demo bike in 1986 from the importer) awaiting restoration.
Not strictly an Auto but another little project I've been playing with is an air cooled 510 which I have had a Rekluse type clutch fitted, still has 6 speeds but no clutch to worry about. Initial trials have been encouraging and it ran the VinduroUK Hot Trod event without any real problems back in september.
    Hope to hear from someone.

Welcome, to Cafe Husky. There has been much discussion on the subject of those springs. Here is a link to one of the threads.

I would really like to hear more about your adaption of a recluse style auto clutch with pictures if you can. But please start your own thread under Vintage/Left Kickers which is where most discussion takes place, questions asked etc.

For me this workshop manual is for 6 speed from 1981 (430) 1982 ( 240-250-500) not for autos.
You'll have better infos with the 430 ae workshop manual I sent even if the 500 ae bottom is a little different
    from the 430 ae one.

    Hi Autopilot
I can't believe I have just discovered another guy interested in husky junk, thought I was the only nut left in the world who loves and rides Auto and 510 AC Husky's.
    Welcome !
What is your 420 spring kind ( see pics)?
On my 420 I have a 430 clutch drum and shoes.
Do you have also a 250 auto ?
    If so you can make a comparative between 250, 420, 430 and 500 ! ;)

About parts dealers, you have hva factory in UK, Tritrophy on US ebay motors, 1 or 2shop in Sweden....

    Welcome tpacitto
    I've just re-read the thread.
There's some info about 500 AE.
The 86-88 430 AE LC workshop manual link posted by Husky Jim is good for your 500 AE , even
if some parts are a little bit different.
If you search in the "Vintage Tech Ref and Parts", you'll probably find
500 ae parts list. In 84 or 85 parts, I think.
Any pics of your 500 AE ?
    Michel

sadly there is probably a problem with the engagement dogs or slots if it happens with just that gear..it is common for 2nd or 3rd to become worn as these are whats beat on and used more than any of the other gears..have to take a look and see

    Welcome to the club....

You need to be travelling pretty fast to have 3rd engage. :) - open paddock stuff or looong straights. Std gearing will see you crack the ton in 3rd.

The springs on each clutch determine the shift point, a stiff spring on the 2nd gear shoes will mean you hold first a lot longer....and so on......
To my knowledge your honour - the 2nd and 3rd gear springs should be the same type.

If they pick up revs as they change gears then eventually bind, you will need to re-groove the brass 2nd and 3rd gear shoes.

    I wouldn't panic just yet.

There's a couple of videos of the 500's in motion, have a listen.
