1987 cr 430 Husqvarna re-build

I got a pro circuit kx 500 pipe and basically cut every weld and re configured it to fit. This gives you a section that kind of loops back on the right side of the bike getting more length like most big displacement two stroke bikes have. It also is significantly thicker and the bike sounds more like a modern bike at least to me. It may take a bit of a husky pipe right at the engine. I can provide some pictures if asked. Moving the large part partially on the basically unused (stock pipe) side allows for a much longer small diameter section before the silencer, which seems to be the modern way things have gone. Looking at large two stroke quad, atv four wheeler etc pipes and what the cart racing guys do when using say a honda cr 500 engine I seem to think there really isn't enough room on a motorcycle.

You're right. Last night, I sent Kevin of Circle F Exhaust an email about building a pipe for my 87 430. He got right back and said he's still building pipes, for 40 years now, but he doesn't build the 430 pipe. If you have an EVO class bike (twin shock), he probably has built a pipe for it.

Pipes of that design and apperance were on some of the top amateur hillclimb bikes perhaps five years ago and those guys went pro. I am not sure if the big two strokes often called hot saws by the four stroke guys are all that prevelant now that the classes changed. I have seen similar pipes with good workmanship. Kind of amazing how abruptly they went from real big diameter to stinger size diameter in the applications I saw.

Ok,I'm back running again.Dynoport finally got my pipe right,if you order a pipe from them for an 87 make sure they give you a pipe for an 86 because their 87 pipe will not fit..

It now starts on the first kick when cold with the de-compressor on,It kicks like a 125cc and actually starts.no blowing in vent hoses,rocking back and forth in gear,just sit on the seat and kick it with you're left leg.
On to my final issue with this bike,the dragging clutch and fitting a hyd. clutch.
Any ideas on the dragging cluch?????

Steel plates don't drag as much as the original aluminium ones.
I bought a cheep chinese hydraulic clutch setup and fitted it to my 85/400 to see what would happen.
Not enough travel and not that much better that the cable one so I chucked it and refitted the cable.

Thanks for the advice Dukk,I have tried my Honda hyd cluch and it will work,I just need to make a cable adaptor.I wan't to make the clutch work right before I try the hyd one so I'm not chasing my ass with a dragging clutch.
Where is the best place to get new clutches and steel plates?

At County motorcycles here in St. louis, the owner has a 86 400xc sitting in the window and it has a hyd. clutch set up on it. Looks like someone machined the cases to mount slave cyclinder. when I asked him about the clutch he said it was already on there when he bought it. He claims it works fine. I wiil take a few pics next time I'm in there.

How about an auto clutch? I emailed garry at efm awhile back inquiring about one for my 430 and his reply was:

Is the clutch on the brake pedal side or shifter side? Do you have a diagram of the clutch and side case? or take a picture of it. We can make them for anything, just you might have to fabricate clearance on the cover on your side, or the early 2 strokes had to modify the shifter.

I haven't had the time or the money to really persue it much but a modern auto clutch would be SWEET!

That would be sweet,I have ridden a few Recluse equipped bikes and like them.
The honda hyd clutch actuator actualy fit's perfect into the Husky's engine clutch cable bracket,just need to extend the cable with an 1.5 inch long adaptor.
My clutch pull is fine,I don't think the hyd. clutch will be much easier but you will never have to adjust it or worry about burning the cable on the pipe.

I was playing around with the gearing today,I went from a 53t to a 54t and it's a bit crisper in second gear now.Going for a ride tomorrow to try it out.

Fits in replacement of the cable.

How is the clutch pull with that set up?

The clutch on my 400 is pretty good so NO it was not much better.
I like to experiment [ muck around ] and did this to see what would happen.
The slave cyl leaks where the thin shiny rod exits and as I said it has not enough travel by just a bit.

Mates 87 or 88 WR400 [ vin plate missing ] has a feather light clutch and I'me dying to pull it to bits and see what they have done with the cam [ ign side ] .
