Whew, just got home from another Baja adventure....Great as always, no injuries or bad drama... I raced on the 302x team of Sean Bradley (Kawasaki KX500). They were 2nd in year points going into the Baja 1000, only 8 points behind Johnson's team. All was going good, we were running 3rd in class all race, about 15th bike overall. I got on the bike at the Mikes turn off road, race mile 400 at about 4:45 pm. We were in 3rd, about 6 minutes behind 301x (Johnson) and 15minutes behind 309x (Ron Wilson, solo). Bike came in with dual hid lights not working....realized it was a stator problem Had to put on battery pack hid light and my helmet light. Bike light grenaded after mikes and helmet light quit at race mile 472. No lights, completely dark. Waited forever before the next bike came through....Finally got a little led flashlight from a car team that got stuck there, taped it to my visor and rode to Valley T. This light put out like 5 lumens, it was enough light to barely light in front of the front fender. No depth perception at all One of the craziest things I have done in Baja on a bike. At Valley T, no chase crew (mix up in radio comms). Local Mexican team fixed my battery pack bike light and I got the bike to the coast highway, where the next rider was not at. With no way to tell how much battery life left, I waited at highway until next rider came back and he rode to the finish. 7th place in class 30....2nd in year end points....301x took the win and class championship...Good job to those guys, they had a strong year...Makes me want to come back stronger for class 30 next year...Anyone want to sponsor a TXC 450 for a serious race effort???? LOL. Mitch. Heard 349x DNF....Thats to bad, hope it wasnt an injury DNF....
No injury. Bike had some issues with both the clutch and some electrical stuff after an early crash (knocked down while passing an eratic slower rider) and then a serious mechanical failure later. I think the crash did some minor damage that lead to major damage..but really I wont know what happened till i tear into it, sometime in January. Lots of speculation, but really its impossible to say. 5 of the 13 guys who raced our class DNFed. Thats baja. Unfortunately it was our time to be one of those who go home tired and broke and frustrated. I ended up spending the night at Baja Pits #3. They had some food and a warm sleeping bag and a tent for me. Very nice of them. Big thanks to 'los Perdidos' the club from TJ who was running that pit for their kind hospitality. Later a class 8 truck running far behind pulled up with hydraulic issues. We all pitched in and got it going, they graciously strapped the Husky to their race truck and we made our way back to pavement and our chase crews. Unfortunately my team wasnt sure if i was hurt or just broken, causing them some concern. Sorry they had to endure that. I was out of communication range in a lonely stretch of baja surrounded by mountains. Sorry too that some of the racers on our team never got to race the bike. Real bummer. Its happened to me in past baja 1000's. Really sucks, actually. Big thanks for all the help from our chasers-Cant do baja without em. Big thanks to Uptite for all the help. Big thanks to 7602 for the nice products. Big thanks to Rob Barnum for suspension help and related stuff. Big thanks to all who pitched in to allow us to get a Husky in the race. Very nice of CHer Huskyrelic to stop by and say hello. On a positive note it did feel like the beginning of a solid core of Husky loving baja racers and supporters spent some intense time in baja, both on and off their Huskys. I really hope it grows into something solid. As a 'team' i have no doubt this group could win either class 30 or 40, or both. Time will tell. San Felipe 250 is in March. See ya all there, of course, on a Husky. Me thinks i wont be the only red and white bike... Congrats to SCORE for putting on another great race.
Hey Mike...sorry about your race...glad to hear it was'nt injury related DNF....Those are always bad deals. So Mike, SF250 would be nice with you guys in Class 40, myself in Class 30 and the A team in Class 22? The reason there are so many Hondas is because they have stayed in the SCORE Baja racing scene, offering pit services and developing the bikes for Baja racing....Lots of folks go with Honda's since the R&D is already there and there is Honda pit support available. Theres not even any Honda contingency for SCORE racing. Mitch.
PS there is also this ongoing Honda power sickness in the SoCal region that comes from the 80-90s in GP and from the 70 80s 90s in MX. Even though Honda has not really been that strong in most racing circles there is still this Honda mindset among a large percentage of motorcyclists. and what Mitch said about Baja people follow the winner plus all the help and r&d they have. Note Kawasaki just officially returned and almost won with a very close second, so a (Ateam)KX450 finished ahead of every bike except one (Ateam)Honda. Also congrats to Ron Wilson for 1st solo (on his Honda)!!!
Sorry to hear you guys did not finish and not everyone got to ride but glad no one was hurt. Hope the next effort ends up better
PS Glad all r OK a broken bike is a major pain and seems like all the effort is wasted. But you guys are all ok and can get the fever up for next SCORE show (SF250). Sorry for the misfortune, best of show in the next one!!
Class 22 was over 250cc so you expect to see 450's. What 's the story on Class 21? 450's there too. CLASS 21 (126cc to 250cc)--1. Ronnie Wilson, Canyon Country, Calif./Shane Esposito, Lake Elsinore, Calif./Brian Pinard, Sun City, Calif./Steve Garnett, Carson City, Nev./Francisco Septien, Ensenada, Mexico/Gerardo Rojas, Ensenada, Mexico, Honda CRF450X, 15:43:08 (42.81 mph) 2. Bill Boyer, Lomita, Calif./Stuart Goggins, Upland, Calif./Nicholas Blais, Chino, Calif., Honda CRF450X, 16:30:01; 3. Carlos Casas, Chula Vista, Calif./Chris Parker, Costa Mesa, Calif., Honda CRF450X, 16:48:33; 4. Jeremy Purvines/Ron Purvines, Henderson, Nev./Jason Trubey, Mojave Valley, Ariz./David Fry, Las Vegas, Honda CRF450X, 17:40:40; 5. Dan Troy, San Luis Obispo, Calif., Honda CRF450X, 29:11:54.
I asked the same thing a while back. Don't recall the answer but these things confuse me. I'll give credit to Score, they described what the classes were in the results. I've been watching the baja 1000 results for a few years and this is the first time I recall seeing that. Are there any 125 2sts that run the baja 1000?
Class 21 is 250 2 strokes and 450 4 strokes. Class 22 (Premier class) is Open Pro bikes. Any size bike, age etc. Class 20 is 125 2 strokes and 250 4 strokes. Back in the 2 stroke era, Class 21 made sense, since there were 250 strokes racing. But now that you hardly see any more 2 smokers in SCORE racing, I think Class 21 should be eliminated, since you are essentially racing the same bikes that are raced in Class 22. That or make it like a school boy (Age) class for up and coming pro riders. Mitch.
Yes, the class George ran in was 125 cc 2sts and 250 4t. They ran it for years and then lately it's been an intermittent class.
Hey Mike maybe it is time to go 2 stroke a little 125 or 250 Heck maybe even a wr 300 If ty and his crew can flog it for the 24 hour at glen helen and it is still running ,Baja would be easy
Want to thank the riders and pit crews, chasers. Rob, Mike, Clay, Kurt, Dennis, Big Mike. Chasers: Brian, Blake and crew, Nick, Mike, Rick, Rob Barnums crew. And George for his trackside experience. Sunday we meet 7602 Clay Hamilton in Calexico, he just got in solo from Colorado. Tired and ready to ride. At the border crossing into Mex, Clay is the only one stopped and they shake him down. This is great the only guy that has never been to Baja and they got him standing outside his truck. We waited...Next thing you know were on our way. Turns out Clay is completely fluent in spanish from previous home in Monterey, Mexico. I don't think we need to worry about Clay. Clay is great, he is a Baja keeper for sure. (you should have seen his rear wheel bearings, they looked liked ground pepper) Monday morn we all pre run from Borrego to the southern tip through Matomi Wash. We met Big Mike there and other great folks like Tim Withers. Big Mike had some great team t shirts made up. They looked great. Tues., Wed., more pre-running. Thursday we have a needed day off. We are all sore as hell as we travel into Ensenada. There we met up w/ Mike Kay and Rob Barnum we wrench on the bike some before sign up and tech inspection. We get wrist bands...We are ready. Friday, race day! 40 or so miles in, BOOM! Husky explodes. Day over. Heartbreak, letdown, this sucks! A lot of time, effort and $ for this. Oh well we just have to chalk it up as "thats racin". Indeed I do look beyond that and see that we had such a great time with all the crew and fun camping in the desert. Fun stuff all the way around. We met great folks and will be friends forever. So I take a hell of a lot away from this Baja journey. Lessons learned: Never wait to shake down a bike till race day. I know this was not intended but time is what we did not have for prep and testing. We actually made a lot of what we had. Relieved that Mike Kay is okay after thinking the worst. 24 hrs. had past since we, or anyone had seen the 349x bike or rider. Especially of Mike's experience in Baja we had to think he was lying in a ditch. Sat. morn day break, we go on a search. We radio Weatherman and tell him we narrowed down our search between RM100 where he went through a pit and RM107 where several pits said he had not come through. 4 of us saddled up, went in rode up and over the summit looking. We got one flat front tire and broke a masterlink but were able to fix. Still no Mike. We rode to RM120 and turned around and went back. Back at the truck Brian and Kurt met us with beers in hand and relieved looks on their faces. Kurt says, "Weatherman just called, Mike is in San Felipe and is okay." Whew. Now we can go home. All in all it was fun, I'm glad we went. Cant wait to win it next time! C ya, Jim.
It is true, they switched bikes. From a 510 with a white IMS tank to a 610 with completely different colors and license plate - not a race bike, certainly not in its current configuration. My understanding is there were some very agonizing moments but in the end it was decided to get a bike, any bike, to the riders that had journeyed from far away places and pitched in $ that had never raced in the Mexico - so they may be able to ride in a Baja 1000. It is also my understanding that during those agonizing moments clear thought was a scarce commodity. The impression they had at the time was it would not make a difference to anyone else racing because they were out of contention at that point. Under these same circumstances any bike, regardless of brand, would meet the same fate. It is in no way any refection of Husqvarna Corporation, Husqvarna bikes, or Cafe Husky.
