I really think that Joan Barreda is the successor to Marc Coma for the future. He has the pace to fight Depres, Rodriguez, Chaleco Lopez, etc. He just needs to keep improving and he will be champion very soon. Go Husky!!! Awesome to se Husqvarna at the top. In my house too we come to a stand still in January to watch everything and anything Dakar on Direct TV (Fox Sports 1, 2, & 3). I also agree with the comment about Depres and what he did to Goncalves last year. A real A hole, very un-sportsman conduct when the Dakar is supposed to be a comradeship of riders and pilots helping each other if they are in trouble more so if they are in the middle of the desert. I used to like Depres, but not anymore after what he did. Do hope Barreda can beat him.
Anyone know why Goncalves got a 15 minute penalty? I missed stage 2 on TV last night, and haven't seen stage 3 yet.
Joan Barreda came off a jump & fubarred his rear wheel & puncturing the fuel tank in the process, Matt Fish was there to help out. Barreda had to go into limp home mode. He'll be on tear tomorrow. Goncalves got 2nd today. Don Hatton had some issues, started moving again & got hit by a truck in the dark. People are with him. Early report is bikes basically totaled in 2 pieces, no GPS & Don thinks he may have a broken leg, he could barely talk. Hoping for the best for Don.
Info from someone in the know I spoke to Don's wife a few minutes ago. Don is still riding towards the end of the special under his own power. Bike is busted up and he may or may not be hurt himself. Bike has no lights, route book, or nav systems (compass). ASO medical team are following him in to the end of the special. Long story short lets keep our fingers crossed. He is not out of the race yet. When he gets to the bivioac and gets cleared medically then the big question is whether or not they can make the bike ridable for tomorrow. We will let everyone know once we know. Thank to all the ADV Riders out there for your support. Lets keep "positive vibes" for Don !! Come on Don, bring it home
Man that is awful to hear, I am rooting for both Simon & Don from the beginning and to hear Don has had this kind of trouble is bad. But I do think i will pull through and will be well. I read how in the past he had similar hard hits while doing the Dakar, so really rooting for the guy to make it. COME ON DON, YOU CAN DO IT!!
Really bad news and luck for Don ... I hate to see anyone put in a position where finishing a race and their long term health conditions are weighted again each other ... I wish him the best in the following days ...
That happened to a friend of mine in 2006. He broke his wrist in one of the early stages but, you know, it's Dakar... He finished, and he'll have that for the rest of his life, but his wrist is undoubtedly far worse off than if he'd called it a day and gotten it taken care of. Can't say that I wouldn't have done the same, though
I'm on the Dakar home page and its seems like I can't get the live feed or even results to show ... I gotta figure I'm too lame to get this stuff to show for me .... EDIT: The page is working now ... http://gaps.dakar.com/2013/dakar/stage-04/aso/ukie.php It look like its gonna show the entire stage as the riders come through in ~real time in each check point ....
MotorcycleUSA.com reports Joan Barreda broke his rear wheel in Stage 3 and lost nearly half an hour. Sounds like he has a good attitude over the incident .. “I was going really well until 40 km in, when I landed after a jump and broke the rear wheel,” said Barreda. “I was forced to stop to try and sort out the damage, but there was nothing I could do about it. So I had to carry on at a slower pace until the end of the special. A shame! But that’s the Dakar. Tomorrow is another day!" ”I really pushed it today and am happy about the podium," said Goncalves. "It was a shame that I got stuck in a dune and lost about a minute trying to get going again. I wanted to win and came pretty close to it” 2013 Dakar Rally Stage 3 Results: Pisco to Nazca – total distance 343 km: 100 km liaison and 243 km special 1. Chaleco Lopez, Chile (KTM) 2:37:54 2.
